Hero's death - part 1

It was just a regular evening of a regular day. Captain Man and Kid Danger, out to save the day again. We would bring in another villain. We'd stop him from doing any other evil activities. We'd thwart his masterplan.

Well, we did stop him, but that's not the point. That evening, Swellview lost an important person. I lost someone important to me. Everyone mourned and even the villains expressed their sorrow, sending me a card. I got it from one of the rogues I fought after that dreadful night, before I defeated him.

Swellview wasn't ready to forget his hero: they build a statue in his honor and placed it in the park, for everyone to see.

That was five months ago. I'm still not over it. Then again, I lost my best friend and one of the greatest heroes that ever lived.

Captain Man and Henry Danger arrived at the old factory at the edge of Swellview. Only recently, they had discovered the newest Swellview villain, who goes by the name 'Savage', used this factory as his secret lair. They could have seen it coming, since this factory used to produce sedatives (and some medication) and Savage's preferred weapon was poison. Many good people have already passed away because of his actions and it is about time Captain Man and Kid Danger would beat him.

"Keep your eyes open, Kid," Captain Man said, looking around for the villain as they entered the factory. They split up, with Captain Man going to the right while Kid Danger investigated on the left. There, Kid Danger saw stairs leading to other floors. He found debris and dust laying around since the factory's closure and everything made out of metal was rusting. That's how the three barrels stood out from the rest, looking as if they had just left the factory where they had been made. Kid Danger walked closer until he could look into it. They were almost completely filled with a dark green liquid. Jackpot!

"Captain Man, look!" Kid Danger said after he turned his head, drawing the hero's attention. Once he had reached his sidekick, he too saw the green liquid.

"Great job!" Captain Man said, "This must be the poison he's using. Don't touch it." He added, just in case. Kid Danger wanted to say that he was not intending to touch it, but someone interrupted him before he could even open his mouth.

"Captain Man and Kid Danger!" The hero and his sidekick turned around. Savage stood five yards away from them, smiling evilly, one knife in each hand. This man differed from the rest as he did not look dangerous with his short dark hair, gray sweatshirt and sweatpants. In fact, if he were to walk on the streets, nobody would realize that man is a villain. The only giveaway would be the two knives he carried with him and the murderous look in his brown eyes.

"Savage!" Captain Man shouted, "What are you going to do with the poison?"

"Aren't you gonna figure it out?" Savage said, not giving them any time to respond to the question. "I have more than enough poison. Just one drop per person is enough to do the trick. I'm sure you can figure out the rest." Captain Man and Kid Danger looked at each other, realizing what Savage was going to do.

"You're going to kill everyone in Swellview," Captain Man said out loud and Savage nodded, confirming that was his evil plan.

"Why would you do that?" Kid Danger asked. Everyone he cared about lived in Swellview. Captain Man, his family and friends. Surely this man had family living here, too, and maybe some friends. What did Swellview do to make Savage want to kill everyone?

"Because" Savage responded, taking one step in their direction, looking at Captain Man, "I hate you, I hate your sidekick, I hate this city! People would thank me for getting rid of this stupid town." Captain Man shook his head in response.

"No, they won't," he said as he and Kid Danger got into the position to fight. From across the room, Savage did the same.

The villain immediately targeted the sidekick. He ran past Captain Man and immediately attacked Kid Danger, ready to plunge his knives into the body. Kid Danger wouldn't let the villain hurt anyone else and avoided getting hit by the knives for now, trying to punch the villain in the face. Savage, however, instead took Kid Danger's arm and flipped him, making him land on his back. Since he wasn't indestructible, Kid Danger didn't immediately get back up, giving Savage a chance to really hurt him.

But Captain Man wouldn't let Savage hurt Kid Danger anymore. He punched Savage a couple of times, while the villain tried to cut through Captain Man's indestructible skin. When he realized he couldn't cut through it, he then chose to use his fists instead of his knives. Savage did throw one of them in Captain Man's direction after a while.

"Missed!" Captain Man yelled triumphantly when the knife flew by him. If he was able to miss the hero when they were no further away from each other than three feet, he had terrible aim.

"I don't think I did," Savage answered, giving Captain Man the time to think about it. As soon as he realized the villain hadn't aimed at him, he turned around and shouted his sidekick's name. "Kid Danger!" The knife already lay on the ground behind the boy, who held his hand on his right arm, probably where the knife hit him. Captain Man didn't have to wait too long for a reaction.

"It's just a scratch," Kid Danger said, removing the hand. It was indeed just a scratch, as far as he could see it, but it could mean anything. Savage, who had waited to see the outcome, continued to fight as soon as Kid Danger responded. He continued to fight with a big smile on his face.

Captain Man, afraid that his sidekick would be hurt even more, decided to end this quickly. He tried to punch Savage several times but he always ducked away right on time. In the meantime, Savage tried to plunge his second and last knife into Captain Man's face. He thought that being indestructible on the outside didn't immediately mean he was indestructible on the inside, thus trying to get that knife in his mouth, nose, ears or anything else. Kid Danger could only watch as the hero and Savage fought, leaning against the wall, covering his painful scratch.

No minute later, Captain Man had won the fight. He successfully punched Savage multiple times, forcing him to drop his second knife. When it landed on the ground, Captain Man grabbed him by his collar and holding him up in the air.

"You are going to prison," Captain Man said and Savage nodded.

"Yes, I will." He still had that smile on his face, and he spoke those words as if he was happy he would go to jail. Maybe, somewhere in his twisted brain he knows that what he's doing is wrong, but after tonight Captain Man barely believed this man could be redeemed.

"Why are you so happy about that?" He asked, pulling him a little closer. However, Savage refused to say anything else and instead of looking at the hero, he turned his head and tried to look past Captain Man's head at something behind him. Captain Man, curious about what he was looking at, turned his head and dropped Savage when he saw it.

It was Kid Danger. He had fallen on the ground and now tried to roll over so he would lay on his back. He seemed too weak to actually do it, as his arms were shaking. He forgot about Savage for a minute and ran to his friend. Before saying anything, he helped his friend lay on his back. Savage's laugh had him turn his attention back to the villain. He made no attempts to escape, content to watch the scene unfold.

"What did you do to him?" Captain Man asked with an angry voice, pointing at his sidekick.

"The same thing I did to those other people," Savage responded, "How else am I supposed to get the poison into their systems? You're lucky you're indestructible." Captain Man grabbed the man by his collar again and help him up in the air for a second time that day.

"Where's the cure?" He yelled into the villain's ear.

"There is no cure," Savage said with glee, "At least, there isn't as far as I know. But that doesn't matter. It's already too late for him." That was the last straw. Captain Man put Savage on the ground and punched him more than once and harder than he's ever punched anyone before, effectively knocking him out.

Then, he called the hospital and police corps. Both promised to be there are soon as possible, though he asked the ambulance to hurry up because Kid Danger's life was on the line. As soon as he hung up, Kid Danger started to speak. Ray didn't hesitate. He ran to his friend and knelt down next to him as Kid Danger panicked and was in pain.

"I can't feel my legs!" he said, repeating that phrase a couple of times. "Ray, I can't feel my legs! I–"

"Calm down, okay?" Ray interrupted him, trying to stay calm himself. More panic wasn't going to solve anything. "You're gonna be fine."

"You heard him!" Kid Danger continued, "There's no cure! I'm gonna die!"

"The ambulance can arrive any minute now," Ray said, "They'll take you to the hospital, you'll be okay." He would have repeated the last three words a couple more times if Kid Danger would have let him.

"What if it's too late?" Kid Danger, on the verge of crying, continued talking. "What if there's a traffic jam? What if they don't arrive on time? What if…"

"Please, Henry, just calm down." Ray said, and it seemed to have a calming effect on him this time. He only continued sobbing.

"I'm scared, Ray," Henry said between the sobs, looking only at his friend, "I'm so scared." Ray nodded.

"Me too," Ray admitted, "but you'll be fine, I promise."

"What makes you so sure?" Henry asked. Ray shrugged.

"You're Kid Danger," was his answer, "You'll pull through." He said it not only to reassure Henry, but also to reassure him that his sidekick wouldn't leave his side this night. He wouldn't let him; he wouldn't believe that tomorrow Henry Hart would be gone.

Henry's breathing slowed down, going back to a regular level. He had stopped sobbing, but there were still tears on his face and in his eyes. He tried to lift his arm, but it didn't work out as planned. Ray took his sidekick's hand and softly squeezed it. Henry squeezed back.

"Ray…" Henry began again after a short silence. Ray could hear he was already having trouble speaking. "If I don't make it–"

"You will," Ray said.

"If I don't," Henry continued, "tell my parents I love them. Tell Piper I still cared about her, despite everything. Tell Jasper—"

"You can tell them yourself," Ray interrupted him again, fighting back his own tears. "Yeah, tomorrow's a good time for that. Let's do it tomorrow," he nodded to himself, his voice cracking. Henry either decided to ignore those words or not to waste words on replying to them.

"Tell them," Henry continued, "My friends and family. Tell them who I was, what I did for 'em. They should know."

"You swore to never, ever, ever tell anyone you're my sidekick," Ray said. Henry showed him a sad smile.

"You never swore to keep that a secret." Soon, the smile faded away and it turned into a painful grimace. Ray remembered the very first day he had met Henry Hart. They could have never imagined how far the two of them would have come. The last two years were a blast and everyone counted Henry as a hero of Swellview, despite his sidekick status. Nobody could take those memories away from them.

Then he remembered the one time where he thought he'd lost Henry. It was during the period when Henry was indestructible. He got hit with that cannonball and Ray hadn't known Henry was indestructible. Oh, the fear and sorrow he'd felt in those moments! He even blamed the cannonball. The tears he had cried then were real.

He figured this was the same, but with one big difference: Henry may never wake up again for real.

"Swellview needs a hero," Henry suddenly began again, looking straight at Ray, "That hero has got to be you, no matter what happens." He paused, probably to regain a bit of the strength he needed to continue talking. "Don't let me stop you from doing what you do best." Ray nodded, knowing what he meant. Don't feel guilty, don't blame yourself. You couldn't have prevented it, because you didn't know what he was going to do. Be the hero Swellview needs. Don't lock yourself away.

Ray squeezed Henry's hand again, trying not to think about how weak he's become in the last few minutes as Henry tried to squeeze him back. "I understand," he said, "But you won't leave me. You are not going to leave me." He paused and then said with a lower tone, "Please don't leave me, kid." As the time passed by this evening, he had been able to hold back the tears until now. The longer it took for the ambulance to arrive, the sooner he would have to say goodbye to his sidekick.

"Stay a hero," Henry said. His voice has gotten lower, barely able to produce any sounds louder than whispering. He squeezed Ray's hand as hard as he could in his state. "Promise me, Ray."

Ray showed Henry a sad smile. "I promise."

After Ray had said this, he heard the sirens in the distance, growing louder with every passing second. Without hesitation, he picked up Kid Danger. "They're here, Henry," he said with an enthusiastic tone. "They are going to make you better." There was no time to lose, every second counted. He kicked the doors of the factory open and ran towards the sound of the sirens, careful that he wouldn't drop Kid Danger while he still kept this speed.

It was late at night. There was no light, except for the lights produced by the ambulance and police car in the distance. There were no clouds in the air and the stars shone brightly. It was a rather peaceful evening and a peaceful moment, if you count out the lights and sirens. Even if there wasn't enough light, Captain Man knew where to go to and whether he was still on the road or not.

"Ray…" Henry's voice croaked. When Captain Man dared to look at him, he noticed how Henry closed his eyes. He could only hope they'd open again.

"Hang on, kid," Ray said, as he tried to run even faster. "We're almost there." Not much later, he could see the ambulance and police car driving to him, almost blinding the hero with the headlights. The police car was first in row, closely followed by the ambulance. When it stopped, Captain Man barely stopped running.

"Savage is still in the factory, unconscious. Get him," he told the officer who wanted to step out of the car to talk to him, but eventually just opened the door to close it again when the hero was done talking. Captain Man moved to the ambulance, where two ambulance care assistants were ready to help Kid Danger while the police car left for the factory. Captain Man put Henry on the bed. Without hesitation, he let the man and woman do their job.

The ambulance remained on the road. Captain Man waited outside the ambulance, looking inside. The man checked Henry's pulse while the woman asked Captain Man exactly what happened, so he told her everything she needed to know.

"In short, he poisoned him," Captain Man concluded his short story and the woman nodded.

"If it really is such a small amount, we may not be able to get it out of his system," she told him, crushing some of the hopes he had. There has to be a way to remove the poison, right? They should be able to do it. If not, then why are they not yet going to the hospital?

"There's no pulse!" the man shouted as he began performing CPR. Ray's eyes widened. No! "Get the defibrillator!" The woman immediately started looking for it. No ten seconds later, she held it in her hands. The man ripped open Henry's clothes so the woman could place the two electrodes on his chest. In the meantime, the man continued to perform CPR, until the woman was ready to activate the defibrillator.

"Clear!" the woman yelled, and a jolt of electricity ran through Henry's heart. Immediately after doing that, she checked if there was a pulse. The man continued with the CPR, seemingly restless, only when he pressed his lips against Henry's to blow some air into it.

"Clear!" the woman yelled for a second time. The man let go of the boy for a second time and after it had delivered a dose of electrical current, he continued while she again checked if there was a pulse.

They repeated this cycle a couple more times, with the woman and man changing from defibrillator to CPR and vice versa. Only after ten minutes, when the police car passed them, bringing the villain to prison, they stopped.

Ray's heart broke into a million pieces when he saw how both stopped trying to save his life. The man put the defibrillator back in his place after noting the time of death. The woman turned to him. He could already guess what she was going to say.

"I'm sorry," she said, "we did everything we could. He's gone." Ray shook his head. He could barely believe it. He did not want to believe it. He stepped inside the ambulance and looked at Henry. He looked so peaceful, as if he was sleeping. The three of them knew he wasn't. He carefully placed a hand on the boy's chest, where the heart should be. He then felt that there, indeed, was no pulse. Ray shook his head again.

"No…" he whispered, tears filling his eyes.

"We're going to the hospital," the man told him after he closed the doors – the woman went to sit in the driver's seat. "Would you like to stay?"

"Yes," Ray immediately nodded, not able to look away from Henry. They are going to put him in the mortuary, he thought to himself. He didn't deserve to lay there yet. He was so young. He would have had such a bright future ahead of him. He would have been a great hero – no, he already was a great hero, even if his official title was 'sidekick of Captain Man'. He took Henry's hand and squeezed it. It lay lifeless in Ray's hand, but he didn't dare pull away yet. He'd keep holding the hand until the ambulance stopped at the hospital.

And despite Henry's small speech right before they left the factory, Ray couldn't help but blame himself for what had happened over there.

What had he done?

After one more hour, Ray finally came down the tube into the Man-Cave. He saw Charlotte and Schwoz were both still awake. He realized he hadn't taken contact with them this evening, so they had no idea what happened. The whole situation had left him speechless, and he had forgotten to tell them. As far as he knew, even the news stations didn't know about Kid Danger's fate yet.

"Hey Ray!" Charlotte greeted him. "How did it go?"

"Where is Henry?" Schwoz then asked, looking at Henry's tube expectantly. Ray and Charlotte followed his example. For a moment, Ray wished Henry would come down there, saying that the doctors somehow revived him. He turned his head away from the tube and Schwoz and Charlotte waited for a mission report. It only took three words to explain what happened without going into much detail.

"Savage got him," Ray said.

"W-What?" Charlotte reacted. She too couldn't believe Savage managed to make Kid Danger his latest victim. Schwoz, on the other hand, only placed a hand in front of his mouth and had a sad look in his eyes. Ray only had to repeat the three words again.

Knowing he wouldn't lie about something as serious as this, it was hard for Charlotte to realize she would never see Henry ever again. The tears soon came and Ray walked to her, embracing her as she cried her heart out. Schwoz had left this room, going to his own, probably to mourn Henry in his unique way. Charlotte left at one point as well, saying her mom would be angry if she came home late again.

Ray was left alone in his Man-Cave. He didn't feel like crying (he's done plenty of that the past hour) and he already missed Henry. Tomorrow, he thought, tomorrow I'll tell them. If that really is what you want, I'll tell 'em.

The rest of the night, he was plagued by the same nightmare of seeing Henry pass away, which kept him awake at night.

Okay, I have no idea where this idea came from (probably Dream Busters and Indestructible Henry part 2) but I just had to write it down. This will be a three-shot, so there will be two more parts. Also, you might want to keep your eyes open, because I may write a multi-chapter story for Henry Danger in the future. Well, that was it for now. Hope you enjoyed!

Also, this is my first Henry Danger fic, so please be nice. It may also take a while before I update this.
