~Chapter 1~
This is the funeral for the woman who didn't do anything bad to anyone. Evelyn Mercer. She is an angel sent to protect the ones no one else wanted. That's how I've always thought of her.
Standing here behind Jeremiah and his brothers is kind of weird. Especially when Jeremiah wanted her to stand next to them. But since they didn't know about her she felt that it wasn't important. Standing not too far away from the famous Mercer brothers was a little intimidating. You see she grew in a neighborhood not too far from the house she lives in now but she's never actually met or seen any of the other brother's that weren't on the pictures in the house.
Bobby Mercer was the oldest one of the group. He's a real hothead. At least we have that in common. As far as she knows, no one's seen him in almost 7 years. Evelyn taught her how to be nice, soften her feminine side and be cordial but mess her over and payback's a bitch.
Jeremiah is the next brother. He's the one that still lives in Detroit with his wife, Camille and their two kids. He's the calm one, the responsible one.
Angel is the third brother and from what I've been told quite a ladies man. But got serious and joined the Marines. I don't even know if he got leave to come to the funeral today.
Then there's Jack, the youngest brother. She doesn't know much about him just that he's supposedly a rock star. And that he was dubbed the sweet one, according to Jerry.
She's known about the brother's since she was 16 but she doubts they know about her. She understands, I mean she did move into the house after they all left, well, except for Jerry; he came back with his wife, Camille and kids. She love those kids to death. They are the most beautiful, adorable little girls. Jerry has raised them good, but god help any boys who try to date them when they become teenagers.
He has become so protective of her that at first she hated it but now she welcomes it. To know that someone cares enough not to cause her harm but instead keep her safe.
When everyone starts to leave as the funeral ended, she walks up towards the casket. She just stares at it, hoping to get a sign about what she should do now. She understands that it's hopeless to think Evelyn will come back but she just wants to feel her again. She sets a white lily flower on the casket.
Evelyn always said that even if the world doubted you that you should never doubt who you truly are. That was also something she'd admired about her. She always knew what to say and could command attention and respect. She could definitely make an impression on you. She feels someone standing behind her.
"Hey, Jerry." She said without turning around.
She feels him move to stand next to her.
"Are you alright?" He asks concerned.
"Yeah. Maybe." She gave him a smile.
"Look after the reception, we'll go back to the house. You can meet us there and I'll introduce you to the rest of the guys."
"Sure. Just come find me when you're ready to go and I'll meet you there."
"Okay. Let's go." He said as they turn and leave the cemetery behind and walk to their cars.
The wind howls against the window as she stood looking out the upstairs window. It was a great idea to have this at Jerry's place. She doubts she could've handled it if it was at the Mercer's place. Staring out she watched all the not so familiar faces walk by in and around the back of the house.
She can barely remember the last few days since she got the news about her mom. It's felt like time passed in a blur. As if she was in a trance for the past couple of days. Like she was a zombie walking around aimlessly, not searching for anything but just living.
When she was younger she accepted that someday she was going to get killed from the way she was living her life. She accepted it because she knew after death everything would be peaceful. But after everything she went through all it taught her was to fight. To be tough. Never show emotion. Emotion can make you vulnerable to the unknown. But only one woman taught her what it means to be a teenager and then a woman. Lyric have never met anyone with such a kind heart and spirit in my whole 21 years of life. She was the one to get her out of that house. Away from that man. She became a savior.
She watched as Bobby walked up to Jack. Jack clutched at the cigarette in his hand, and it looks as if he's trying not to cry. She knows how he feels. She hasn't really cried over it yet. She can't because she knows if she lets the floodgates out she wouldn't stop. She doesn't think she could if she wanted to. It's just too painful. And she feels like she has to be strong for Evelyn. It sounds stupid that she hasn't cried for the woman who has given her a new life but she just can't. She watches as they walk up to Jerry and talk before they walked into the house.
She walked to the other window that gave her a view of the backyard. She sees Green and his new partner Fowler, walk in through the back gate. She shudders. Fowler gives her the creeps. It's kinda the way he stares at her. Like she's some kind of prey and he's the hunter just waiting for the right moment to capture. After a few moments she hears Daniela and Amelia run into the house. They run up the stairs and she steps away from the window to meet them.
"Now, who are you two running from?" She asked.
"The policeman." Amelia says.
She laughs. "Yes, sweetie. That's good, you're learning" She teased, even though she knows she's serious.
They both giggle.
"Are you going to stay?" Daniela asked.
"You mean stay at the house?" She replied.
The girls nodded.
"Yes. I couldn't leave the most beautiful little girls in the world, now can I?" She kneeled in front of them.
"No!" They said in unison.
She gives them both a hug. She hugs them a little tight as if she can't bear to let them go.
"Okay, you should go and be with your mother. I know she could use some of your sunshine."
"Okay." They said together. The girls turn and run back down the stairs.
She started to walk back towards the window when she hears someone coming up the stairs. Thinking it was Jerry, or some other family member, she kept walking towards the window. She stops dead cold when that person speaks. She turns and sees Fowler standing behind her with a sickening grin on his face.
"Now, tell me why you are up here by yourself?" Fowler leered at her.
"Avoiding bastards like you." She replied quickly. "And since this is my brother's house I don't think he'd appreciate cops going upstairs into his house." As you probably can tell, she's super sarcastic and a bitch. But those are qualities you learn to love.
"Now, now pussycat, you wouldn't want me to arrest Jeremiah, now would you?" Her eyes go wide at that statement.
"You wouldn't."
He takes a step closer towards her so she takes a step back.
"I could. I am a cop." He said cockily.
"Green would never let you do that without some type of evidence." She stated. Besides unless Green had evidence, he wouldn't arrest any of the Mercer's.
"Oh don't worry about that evidence. I can make all types of things happen." He said still stalking towards her. She kept walking back until she was stopped by the wall. She looks from side to side but knowing that there's nowhere for her to go.
"What do you want?" She spoke angrily.
"Well, I'm a man and you are a very beautiful woman. You can do the math."
"Yeah and here's where I throw up." She countered. He takes a giant step and stands in front of me.
She balls her fist up and pulls back to swing when he catches her wrist. He grabs her other one and yanks them both above her head. Leaving her immobile.
"Let me go!" She spat at him in a whisper. She doesn't want to cause trouble for Jerry or make a scene if she can avoid it.
"Oh you don't want to play? I mean I can find so many uses for a mouth like that." He brings his hand down and caresses her cheek.
She just glares at him. She can practically feel her body shaking. She hates this feeling of vulnerablity. It brings her back to a moment of her past and she can feel her breathing getting harder.
Just then when he opens his mouth to say something he gets whirled around and pushed against the opposite wall. Her hands fall to her side and she slides slowly down to the floor trying to control her breathing.
"Look, the lady said let her go. Next time you want a sex object just buy a hooker like the all the other cops of Detroit's finest. Now get out of my brother's house." The mystery guy said as he loosens his grips on Fowler. Fowler sneers at him and then glares at me before stalking back down the stairs.
She hears footsteps walking towards her. She slowly raised her head and stares at the man who came to her rescue.
"Are you okay?" He asked softly.
"Yeah." She replied not really knowing what else to say. As she stares into his soft blue eyes she sees him staring back into her brown ones.
"You're shaking." He stated.
"It'll pass in a few minutes." She replied.
"I'm sorry." He said.
She stared back at him confused. "For what?"
"For jackasses like that. Especially since that's a cop."
"It's okay. I understand that not all guys are like that." Well, she knows Jerry isn't.
"That's good." He smiled. We just sit there staring at each other for what feels like hours. Then they hear Jeremiah yell,
"Jack? Let's go."
"I'm coming." He yelled back. He stands up and offers his hand.
She takes it as he slowly pulls her up.
"Thanks for helping and saving me." She said quietly.
"It's all good. Oh yeah, I never told you my name. I'm Jack Mercer," He holds out his hand to shake. She places her small hand in his slightly larger one and she instantly feels a shock. She pulls back her hand and stares him. It looks like she wasn't the only one who felt it.
"Maybe I'll see you around some time?" He asked.
"Maybe sooner than you think." She replied with a smile.
"Umm...yeah I better get going before they leave me. See you around."
"Bye." She watches him walk down the stairs.
She walks to the window and watched Jerry get into his van and Jack and Bobby climb into Bobby's car. Jerry looks up in the window. She gives him a wave that says she'll meet him there. He nods in understanding. She watches as they drive off.
After saying goodbye to Camille and the girls, she walks to her car. The car is a little worn down but it can get her to the places she needs to be so it's all good. She pulls away from Jerry's house and heads to the Mercer house. As she pull into the driveway, she sees the lights are on. She walks in through the back way and through the kitchen careful not to make a sound just in case Jerry hasn't has a chance to tell them yet. She locks the door behind her. She walks to the front and puts her coat up on the rack. She goes to the stairs and she can hear voices upstairs.
She hears someone yell, "I'm not." That must be Angel, she thinks.
"Jerry?" She called upstairs.
"Come on up." He replied.
As she walks up the stairs and she can hear Bobby's voice asking "Who the hell is that, Jerry?"
As she reaches the top step she steps next to Jerry. She makes eye contact with Jack. She sees his eyes widen but he doesn't say anything. He takes another drag of his cigarette. She looked over at Bobby but she can't read the expression on his face.
"Um, hi." She gives a short wave.
"Jerry? Who is she?" Jack asked.
"Who is she?" Angel asked at the same time.
"This is Lyric Johnson. But I call her Justice. Lyric, this is Angel, Bobby and Jack."
"Yeah I kinda already met Jack." She told him.
"Okay, so you're Lyric but what are you doing here?" Bobby asked looking at me hard.
All her niceness she planned slips away as she said, "I live here." Her tone is harsh and bitchy.
"What?!" All three of the others yell together.
