Who We Are

It's too hot in the auditorium. That's what this year's graduation class has all agreed on. I bit my lip, shifting from foot to foot in my graduation gown. It's dark too, at the auditorium entrance, and the soft murmur of the crowd is too eerie for a graduation class. Maybe it's because they know that they're losing almost half of their amazing, state championship winning, football team this year. Maybe it's because they know that the coach's daughter is getting married soon, and they're all eagerly waiting the announcement of when that is going to happen. She insisted that her and her fiancé would announce it today, after everyone had received their diplomas, but with her anything can happen.

I glance up to my brother, who has been staring intently at the floor for the past five minutes, chewing on his fingernail. I smile, giving him a gentle nudge and he looks up.

"What, Lilly?" Kendall muttered.

"You're going to chew off your fingernail if you keep doing that, Kendall." I giggled as he took his hand away from his mouth quickly. I frowned at him then as he started to stare at the ground again, "What's wrong?"

"I'm nervous."

"Why?"

He shrugged, "… We're graduating. Finally. We're getting out of this... Crazy place. And then we're going to be starting our lives, and I don't know if I can handle it." The words came out quickly, and I adjusted his hat.

"Look at me," I murmured, tapping at his chin and Kendall slowly looked up, "We were meant to do this, and this has been our goal for the past year. You're not going to get all bent out of shape while thinking about the future. Because, right now, that's all that matters. Not what's going to happen tomorrow, or ten years from now. You have your friends, and me, who will help you figure the rest of this out. And right now, your job is to make sure that you don't trip up those stairs. Now, Kendall James Truscott, do you have anything else to say?"

Kendall shook his head, chuckling, "I'm so glad you're my sister."

I shrugged, "I know."

"Always the same amount of modesty." Kendall joked, grinning.

I opened my mouth to reply a snarky remark to him, but I was cut off by our class song beginning to play. The lights slowly started to begin to lighten, and the reality of the fact that I was graduating felt like a brick wall being thrown at me. My thumb flew to the ring around my finger, and started to twirl it anxiously. Kendall glanced back at me and chuckled at my expression. Then, incredibly, being the most amazing big brother, he took my hand and together we slowly started to follow the line down the aisle side-by-side. I manage to put on a smile, and I slowly begin to reel myself back in time to how I got to this moment, right here, right now.

I start remembering out my, Lillian Rose Truscott, senior year. I start remembering about my cheerleading squad, my brother on the football team, my basketball team, my memories of love, and of heartbreak. I start remembering about one of the greatest and worst years of my life.

And how it all started because of one silly, amazing, gorgeous, funny guy, a heartbreaker named Jacob Black.
