Merlin awoke from his peaceful slumber to the sound of horse hooves. That's funny, he thought, horses never come this close to the castle. He was exhausted from running around for Arthur all day, and groggily turned over and fell asleep.
When the magician awoke for good, he was lying on the floor, and his bed was on the ceiling. In fact, his whole room had been turned upside down. With his tall ceiling, he couldn't even reach his cabinet, so went to work in Gaius's ugly robes.
"What do you think you're wearing, Merlin?"
"Arthur, my room is upside down!"
Arthur jerked his head back doubtfully.
"Yeah. I know, sounds silly. You can come have a look if you don't believe me."
"Later, Merlin. For now, I've got some manure for you to clean" Arthur said with a cheeky smile. Merlin could have slapped him.
"Upside down, eh?"
"Bu-"
"Right, Merlin. Now what's your excuse for wearing that hideous thing?"
"It was- in the morning. I swear. I don't know how this happened, but now it's not nailed to the roof."
"I highly doubt it ever was" Arthur said with a condescending shake of the head.
Merlin threw up his hands. "I don't know why or how, but now it's on the floor, and it was on the roof, okay? Can you just take my word for it once?"
"Hm, let me think… no."
"Artur!"
"Merlin, I don't know what to do with you."
"What do you mean‽"
"You need some punishment."
"But I didn't do anything, I swear!"
"Yes, but you've lied to me. Probably four times just today."
"But it's true!"
"Merlin, you need to spend a bit of time in the dungeons."
"Fine. Fine! Don't trust me!"
Merlin spent the night in the dungeon. He figured that his straw was at least better than the floor. Arthur picked him up at noon.
"Merlin. You have served your time."
"Yes. I have."
"Merlin, do you know what today is?"
"No…"
"April second."
"Yeah. Okay."
"So what does that make yesterday?"
Merlin paused. "Oh." Then paused a bit more. "Wait, no I didn't! I wasn't lying!"
Arthur smiled. "Nope. I know. It was me! April fools!"
Merlin facepalmed.
"I got you, didn't I? It was pretty good. They turned your whole room upside down! I call that an achievement!"
"Yaay. Great job."
"Yes. I know. Now back to work, Merlin."
