You're Still The One

Evelyn knelt down in front of Danny's grave. Many, many years had passed since his death, since Pearl Harbor. Over fifty years to be exact. She was an old, old woman now. She had two lovely children and five perfect grandchildren. One of those children and three of those grandchildren were Danny's. Danny Walker. How she missed him.

He was in her dreams, her thoughts, and her prays. "Oh Danny. I never stopped loving you. You know that right?" She didn't expect an answer from him. She never did but sometimes she could swear she heard his voice.

Rafe was gone now too. He had died of a heart attack nearly ten years ago. Now both of the men she loved were gone. One longer than the other but still they were both gone. And soon her time would come too. "Danny for over fifty years I have come to your grave, come to see you. I love you, forever. That love will never die."

She didn't know why she was speaking to him. Granted she did it often but somehow this was different. "I know that." A voice murmured from behind her.

Evelyn jumped up and spun around, "Danny?" She breathed, "Is that you? Really you? But how?"

Danny shrugged, "I'm only a spirit my love but I couldn't let you torture yourself anymore."

Evelyn looked down at her hands. They were no longer old lady's hands, rather younger hands. Hands that had belonged to her fifty years ago. "How?"

Danny embraced her, "It doesn't matter. What's important is that we are together. At least for the moment."

Evelyn buried her face in his neck, "Oh Danny. I've missed you so much."

Danny pulled back and then kissed her passionately on the lips. Evelyn's heart pounded in her ears. How she had missed this. "I know Evelyn and that's why I had to come to you. To tell you that I still love you and that I always will. So you will stop torturing yourself and begin to enjoy living with your children and grandchildren."

Evelyn smiled as the tears rolled down her cheeks. "You will always be the one. The one I wanted to spend my life with, love and grow old with."

Danny gave her a guilty smile, "But that's not what fate had planned for us. But someday we will be together again."

Evelyn kissed him again, "Soon." And then Danny was gone. Evelyn turned back around and smiled at Danny's headstone. "You're still the one." She whispered, "Forever."
