An elf sat in a tree. This in itself is not odd. What is odd, however, is that this elf was not happy to be in the tree, nor did he wish to be on the ground. At that moment, in fact, he had no wish to be anywhere at all. He just wanted to be left to his thoughts, which, for an elf, were very gloomy. He was pondering Time. He supposed Time must have been badly injured, whether in heart or mind he did not know, for it seemed that Time had been so incapacitated lately that it hardly moved at all. Day by day, it would crawl on its hands and knees, just barely making it to a place where it could rest, only to realize that there was no resting for Time. There were also moments when the elf felt that time had stopped and given up completely, too battered to continue its journey. Those were the worst occasions for the elf, for if time stopped completely, there was absolutely no chance that what he wanted would ever come to pass. Yet most of all, the elf felt he could relate to Time. He sometimes felt that he and Time were directly related, for he could find the same amount of rest as Time and he was just as incapacitated.
At this thought, his mind began to reevaluate Time's troubles, for if he and Time were so alike, then of course he knew what had happened. Time had not been struck by any mortal thing that delivers stinging pain and lets the blood run free. Time had fallen to an immortal foe; a foe who is both friend and enemy. Time had been utterly defeated by Love. Just as the elf had, Time had glimpsed his lady, and just as the elf, Time had immediately fallen in love with her. Then Time was betrayed by his Lady Love, and Time knew he was defeated. At that moment, Time wanted nothing more than to give up, but Love kept him from ending all hours. Love reminded Time that there were those who needed him. When Love called him so gently, Time could not remain lost to the world, for if he had, surely he would have regretted missing the chance to see his Lady Love one more second. Once Love was certain Time would not fade away again, and that he knew his place, his Lady Love told him to let her go, just as the elf's lady had instructed him to do. Alas, this was one thing Time did not have a choice in. Time would have to let Love go, either by death or by absence. Time could not allow the death of Love, for that would plunge the whole world into disaster, so he did the only thing he could do. Time turned the blade on himself and let Love go away from him, knowing that he would forever be crippled. Now, Time was wounded and barely moving along, having lost the only thing he cared not to lose. Just the same, the elf could hardly handle the pain and emptiness that the absence of love created. Yes, Time and the elf were very alike indeed.
