Darkness. That's the first thing I remember.
Though it was dark, I felt warm somehow. Actually, more than warm. Not hot, not warm. Something in between. It was a nice feeling, like when you sit curled under a blanket and just feel peaceful.
I opened my eyes for the first time and almost got blinded.
Light; light everywhere. Flashes of red, orange and yellow lights. It looked like I was sitting on a fire.
Wait a minute...
I am sitting on a fire.
My first reaction was to scream from panic. Then I looked at my hands carefully. No burn marks? Now that's strange...
And then I came to the conclusion that the flames actually didn't hurt me. On the contrary, I was feeling nice sitting there. Safe.
Okay, I'm seriously losing it. I mean, feeling safe sitting on pure flames?
I gazed above me to the night sky. The moon -which happened to be full- filled my face with its own unique glow. For a moment it seemed like it talked to me.
Strange..., I thought to myself.
I got up and scanned my surroundings. Naturally, I found myself in the middle of a forest. There was a lake with nice, clear water nearby. The flames in which I had been sitting were making a circle around me, but they weren't expanding to the rest of the forest.
I noticed a spear lying on the forest floor. It was wooden, with its tip was bronze. I touched it with my fingers and immediately some strange marks drawed themselves on the wood. Then it glowed red. I picked it up and tested its tip with my hand. Not very sharp I thought. I threw it to the ground, and it fell on a pile of leaves. Then the strangest thing happened: the leaves took fire as soon as the spear touched them. Cool. Or should I say "Hot"?
I turned and faced the little pond. Using it as a mirror, I looked over it and my eyes met a dark brown haired-girl with the tips of her hair a warmer brown. Her wide brown-red eyes glowed like vicious flames and stood out in the night scenery.
I turned back to the pile of leaves and grabbed the spear. Whithout thinking about it, I waved it above the still on fire leaves. The fire was absorbed by the spear's tip, and it glowed a more orangish color. Looking back at the leaves, I couldn't tell the difference to what I saw and what it looked like before I threw the spear.
Suddenly, I heard hurrying footsteps behind me. Hunters. I waved my spear over the flames and it absorbed them as well.
I started looking desperately for a place to hide. Too late. The hunters had already reached me. Maybe it's for the best. I could ask them where I am, or how I got here.
I waved at them, and said "Hi". I was surprised at the sound of my voice. It was warm and welcoming, like when you sit in front of a fireplace and the warmness fills you with energy.
I was surprised to see that they didn't seem to notice me or even see my waving.
I was also surprised they didn't hear me.
But the biggest surprise was that one of them passed right through me. As if I wasn't even there.
I sat down, too stunned to speak.
What was going on?
I turned and ran, ran as far as my legs would carry me. I didn't stop to look back once, and I hardly noticed the speed in which I was running.
Oh, by the way, I am Emma Heat.
How do I know that?
The moon told me so. That's all he ever told me. But that was a long, long time ago.
