I do not own Avatar: The Last Airbender
Avarice (Greed)
Toph had grown up rich. She never wanted anything, except the only thing that her father wouldn't give her – freedom. Toph was rich because her father was rich. He had inherited a vast sum from his own parents, and had earned even more himself. But it was never enough for Toph's father.
"I work so hard for you, Toph. I want you to always be happy and comfortable," he would say. She saw right through that façade. Her parents already had enough money that she could hold a banquet every day with all of here guards for the rest of her life and still not run out of food or money. His reasons were much simpler than fatherly love. He was greedy, plain and simple. All he wanted was money because money brought respect and respect brought power.
Now she saw greed at work again. This time, however, it wasn't some quick witted entrepreneur from the Earth Kingdom; this was an entire nation intent on controlling the world. Same principle. Land brings wealth which brings respect which brings power. Greed. Greed. Greed. Toph could never understand it. What's the point in taking and taking until there's nothing left for anyone else?
That's really why Toph was helping Aang stop the Fire Nation. She had never been able to stop her father from succumbing to the allure of money and power. Maybe this time she could help.
