Caught Up In Korra
Korra was like no girl Mako had ever met. For one, Republic City girls would never be seen walking around in heavy furs. Most women chose lighter, more delicate materials. Her clothing was a symbol of pride in where she came from, but it also marked her as an outsider. Mako had found himself intrigued.
And really, who had a polar bear dog? He'd never known that they were house pets. He'd heard vague tales of polar bear dogs being the type of predator that one prayed never to meet. Incidentally, when he'd asked Korra about it, she'd calmly told him that she was the first person ever to domesticate a polar bear dog, as if it were no big deal. The way she'd laughed when she recounted the story of her first attempt to put a saddle on Naga had made him wonder what it would be like to be caught up in her world.
The first time Mako heard her sigh over sea weed noodles as if it were the most delicious delicacy, which it turned out it was in the Southern Water Tribe, he'd turned a little green. But to see the smile that lit up her face every time he took her to the run down little restaurant that actually did sell them, it made it all worth it. Even if he did feel like retching as the noodles slide down his throat.
Her hands weren't as smooth as some girls, but Mako had never minded a few calluses. He'd never met a girl before who could give him a thorough thumping during a sparring match. While he knew he would go home with muscles aching, their matches had quickly become one of the things that Mako found himself looking forward to. After hours spent testing each other's skills they would collapse exhausted onto the ground next to each other. And if they stayed there a little longer than was necessary, then that was fine with him.
He'd wondered what it would be like to be caught up in her world. Somehow, before he'd realized it, he already was.
