The Last Dance

Christopher walked down the old, dented street as the glimmering clouds leapt over in the distance. He was still wearing his suit from the dance at the middle school. He hadn't gotten to dance with Alexis that night. He could still remember getting out of his dad's old white dodge pickup truck. He looked up at the sky as the orange and pink clouds faded into the distance. He walked onto the cement platform that stood before the back entrance to the school. He wore a smile on his face and held a rose in his left hand. He was sure he would dance with her tonight. Everything seemed perfect. The wind was flowing through the mid fall air. The wind brushed through his dirty blonde hair. He looked inside the school and saw couples dancing to the most modern hits. He held his head confidently. He opened the door to the back entrance of the school and took a deep breath.

He could almost feel Alexis's hands with each rushing wind that flew at him once the door slammed shut. He saw the cafeteria decorated with lights and confetti, and strangely even a mirror ball. He looked around to find someone he knew. He walked down the small corridor painted dark grey and white. Although, it was hard to tell what color the hall was painted. He smiled at the receptionist, or what Mrs. Anderson liked to call herself at the dances held in the previous years. He smiled at her and handed her his ticket. "Well, Mr. Winters, you look quite the catch this evening," she said. "Why, thank you, Mrs. Anderson. "Who are you planning to spend the evening with that made you want to dress formally?" she asked. "Oh, I was just going to hang out with James, Dante, and…and…Beth," he replied. "Beth, huh?" she said. "Yeah," Chris said. "Well, you have a great time and let me know if anything happens between you and Beth," Mrs. Anderson said. "Okay, you too," Chris said to her.

He walked into the cafeteria and saw the gleaming lights reflecting off of the mirror ball. The newest hit song by My Teenage American Summers was playing full blast throughout the school. Even some of the teachers and staff were trying to be cool by dancing to it. It wasn't working well for them. He searched around the room for Dante and James. He sought them around the obvious places. He looked for them around the dance floor, the concessions stands, and even the bathroom. He looked around the room once again and saw Dante waving at him and devouring a red and blue slushy. "Hey, Chris!" James called. Chris waved back and headed over to the slushy stand.

He walked over to them and smiled. "What's up, guys?" Chris asked. "James and I are finding a bunch of tickets for free slushy's from the last dance. It's funny; I thought they would've learned to use different tickets each year." Dante said. "Dude, this is so awesome! We're buying slushies for no charge like crazy!" James said.
