Scorpius sighed and slowly made his way to his feet, so far it was not the best day to be him. Jenna, his girlfriend of three years, had stormed out thirty minutes before after having broken up with him and his best friend had accidently revealed he was the reason for the break-up. Now he was without a girlfriend and a friend. He was not in a good mood.

Weirdly enough, he wasn't even all that bothered by the fact that he was single after three years. His problem was the fact that it was because his best friend had stolen his girlfriend's heart without even notifying him that he liked her in the first place. Again he sighed before making his way to the kitchens to get something to eat.

He made his ways through the twisting and winding and altogether confusing halls until he finally stood in front of the portrait of the pear. He tickled it and pushed his way inside where he immediately regretted ever having had made the trip. His ex sat snogging his ex best friend. Of course Mike just had to see him and make a big deal about it all, which just made it worse and Will eventually just made his way out having not muttered a word.

He wandered the hallways quietly occasionally greeting someone passing by. He sighed again as he heard a loud group of girls pass by. They were all surrounding none other than Wendy, his enemy's best friend. Don't ask him why they were enemies, he couldn't remember, they just fought a lot and it felt natural. In fact he knew the perfect cure for the melancholy feeling. He needed to have a nice, long, heated fight with her, Rose.

Scorpius smirked, looking forward to the fight before he overheard just what the loud girls were saying, "-Crying ever since! Poor thing, he didn't even give her a good reason or anything! He just up and broke up! I mean, what's with that?"

He slowed his pace so he could listen longer, trying to figure out who they were talking about, and one of the girls spoke up, answering his question, "Poor Rose, doesn't she see he's not worth it?." Rose?

He nearly slapped himself; Mike had told him yesterday that he had broken up with his girlfriend. His girlfriend Rose! He suddenly felt so selfish; here he was moping around the castle when he had completely forgotten that someone else in a longstanding relationship, since the beginning of the year, had just been dumped too. At the very least they both needed a good fight to let off steam.

Scorpius found her on the dock by the lake, feet in the water and watching the mer-children play. She was the only person anyone could ever remember that was able to draw them out without being killed by their overprotective parents. Even as he watched though, the mer-children knew something was wrong. One of them approached and gently touched her foot to get her attention. As she looked up he could see her tears as she gave them a watery smile.

The mer-child looked at him as he stood a safe distance away, staring. It was hard to decide if it was a girl or a boy. The children were hard to tell apart until adulthood, or at least that was what books said, but this one was easy, it had a scar on its face reaching from its temple to its chin. It looked sad as it stared at him. Finally it looked at him to her, then back, and then repeated until he got its point. It wanted him to talk to her since it couldn't without her knowing its language or giving her a headache to add to the heartache.

"Hey." Her head jerked up in surprise, having not noticed the silent communication between Scar and him. She stared at him for a moment before looking back to the lake

"Hey." She finally muttered.

He frowned; no sarcastic comments meant that it was really messing with her emotions. He sighed and sat next to her and looked into the water where the mer-children were now playing a much safer distance away.

"Mike's a git." Again she looked up in surprise but he just looked into the water silently. She looked back at the water.

"Yeah." He smirked to himself before adding, "I don't see what you saw in him."

Rose laughed quietly,"Yeah. Me neither. I know I dated him for some reason but it's lost to the winds now huh?"

She then shot him a look, "What do you see in him?"

Scorpius grinned, "Y'know, I know there was a reason, but its lost to the winds somewhere, maybe I'll find it someday and realize what a terrible reason it was."

Her look became quizzical, "Why does that sound like your little bromance is over?"

Scorpius sniffed dramatically, "Well you see, he had been acting all funny since about three months into the year so I followed him yesterday and he was with a girl."

She laughed quietly, "Yeah well at least you still got your backup girl for if the bromance died right?"

His smile dropped, "Yeah well that's just the thing, the girl was my backup girl."

Rose looked at him again surprised and confused, "You're not the only one who got dumped today."

She took his hand comfortingly but couldn't help her characteristic sarcasm, "Actually you are the only one to get dumped today, I was dumped yesterday."

They smiled at the water and she extracted her hand, the need for simple comfort having passed. Scar made them both jump in surprise when he jumped out of the water and gave a twirl before splashing back into the water and soaking them both. They both jumped to their feet and gasped at the coldness of the water on their skin.

As he stood muttering and trying to dry off he heard a sudden snort of laughter coming from Rose, "What?"

She just shook her head breathlessly and laughed again. Self-conscious Scorpius felt his head for any ridiculous patch of hair that was sticking up but instead found a clump of seaweed stuck in it.

After extracting it and plopping it back into the water he turned to her, "Rather immature of you don't you think Rose?"

Rose laughed breathlessly, blissfully unaware of her coming fate, it wasn't until she felt the gently push that she realized how close she was to the water.

Scorpius smiled as she flailed around in the water and turned and walked away, happily absorbing her cursing and shouting, safe from any hexes or jinxes, since she was still trying to get out of the water. Rose was back to normal, which meant he was fine.

Everything was back to normal. Except the fact that they were both now single… that wasn't normal.
