"Was it worth it?!" Iron Man was watching the captured Captain America with a cold emotionless face shield. He had seen the Star Spangled Solider get angry plenty of times in and out of battle but this time his yelling, his yelling at him, was shaking Tony to his core. He felt a sharp stinging tingle dance across the bridge of his nose. "TELL ME!"
Behind the mask Tony Stark closed his eyes and held in tears that threatened to fall. He had told himself that if he ever got the chance to talk with Steve face to face he'd tell him 'It wasn't worth it'. All of this, the war, the death of friends, the loss of his best friend was something that definitely wasn't worth it. He wanted to tell him so badly. He opened his eyes and looked at the angry blond, every curve and crinkle of his face were highlighted by the blue glowing bars between them. Tony's blue eyes became shallow pools and he felt something slide down his cheek. He blinked back more tears and took a right step forward.
"Well...you're a sore loser, Captain America" The hollow voice of Iron Man masked his voice so well Tony didn't have to wonder if his friend knew how he was really feeling, Steve knew him too well. He didn't mean to say that, but this whole time he felt like he was reaching out to his friend, to get to where he was. He wanted to be worthy, he's never wanted to be worthy of anything, anyone. Iron Man turned and walked off, he knew Steve was watching his hotrod red and gold back, no longer angry...
"You bet"
...but not defeated either.
