"So. That's it, then." Rei's voice echoed loudly throughout the empty mansion. Beside him Kai nodded, his eyes casting about. The bluenet let out a sigh. Rei turned to him and offered him a lopsided smile. "What's up?"

"It's just hit me. I've spent most of my life in this house. It's been in my family for generations." His head turned to face Rei. There was some unidentifiable emotion in his red eyes. "Why am I selling it?" Rei put his arm around Kai's waist and kissed him on the cheek.

"You know it needed to be done. You said so yourself." Kai nodded and returned Rei's one-armed embrace. "You never stayed here."

"I know. Bad memories here. But… there are good ones, too." A faint smile appeared on Kai's face as he gazed around the empty entrance hall. Over there- just where there was a grey line on the white painted wall where the table had been- there was where the Christmas tree used to sit before his parents died. Every Christmas morning he would try to sneak down the stairs to reach the large pile of presents that would always be waiting for him. His mother would always be waiting just at the door way -to the right, there- for him, and would always sneak up and surprise him.

Just up the stairs, where the old green rug had been removed in the hall, third door on the left when you turned right at the top of the stairs. That had been his first real bedroom. He was still convinced that if he entered that room he would see himself- younger, and faint like a ghost- sitting on the bright blue carpet and playing with that wooden train set his paternal grandfather had given him for his seventh birthday.

Then there was the cupboard (which was more like a large room) under the staircase. He would hide there for hours when he felt like being alone. His feet automatically started towards the doorway hidden beneath the scarlet drapes which spilled over the stone banister. Later on in his life he would go there to escape his Grandfather.

If you turned left at the top of the stairs and kept walking until you had passed five rooms on the right hand side there was the room right above the kitchen. That was the room Rei had always stayed in. That was the room in which they had first slept together.

The arm around his waist tightened and he felt Rei's lips against his temple. He brought himself out of his daze to see Rei giving him a concerned smile. He let his eyes trail over the space.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Kay, kay, kay, said the echo of Rei's voice. Kai looked back at him and nodded.

"I'm fine." The tone was softer than Rei was used to. "Let's go." Rei nodded and let go of Kai. He walked out the massive front doors. Kai walked closely behind him walked out; giving the hall a last look -the ghosts of the past playing in their endless circles- and shut the door behind him.
