Necessity of Invention

I sat cross-legged on the bottle cap stool in 2's room, watching him fix the glass shields into place. Finishing, he held up the staff with the tea light on the end. "Perfect. It was so bothersome to keep relighting this."

"You know," I said, resting my head in my hand. "If you had that attached to, say, a hat, you wouldn't have to hold the staff at all. Do you think that could work?"

He blinked. "Yes...I daresay it could." He looked at me, and I ducked my head under his gaze. "That's brilliant."

I muttered a thank you and looked away. The room fell silent, except for the sounds of 2 rummaging through his junk pile for something that could constitute a hat.

A rusty metal cone rolled towards me, and I picked it up absently. It was fairly thin metal, that I could have bent out of shape if I applied too much pressure. It just fit over my fist, and if I straightened out a finger I could stick the tip of it through the top. I turned it over in my hands, carefully scratching at the spots of rust. Red-brown flecks fluttered to my lap.

"5?" My head jerked up. 2's hat was already completed, and he was lighting it carefully. "This should do the job nicely."

I smirked at the shape of the hat. "Careful, or 1 will think you're trying to steal his throne." It was a weak joke, but 2's soft laughter echoed through the room anyways.

Setting the cone down, I stood and half-heartedly attempted to brush the rusted flecks off my legs. "It's getting kind of late. I should probably be getting back to my room." I paused. "Um, do you mind if I take this...cone?"

He smiled gently, and I instinctively hunched my shoulders. "Of course." He looked like he was about to say something more, but after a moment of hesitation, he shook his head. "Goodnight, 5."

"G-goodnight." I hugged the cone under my arm and tried not to dart too quickly out of the room.
