The Yearly 365 Challenge
Prompt #112 (Item) Radio
Betty tilted her head to the right. "Of all the teenagers our generation why am I not surprised that you are the only one whom still has a radio."
Veronica shrugged. "I like reto things." She picked up the thin small radio and turned it looked at it. "My mom was going through some of her stuff in the attic; and she was surprised that she still had this one. She thought she tossed it after she bought her boom box."
Something on the back of the radio surprised the blonde. "Can I see it a moment Ronnie?" Her voice hitched as she spoke.
Veronica looked up and handed the radio to her somewhat shell shock best friend. "Sure Betts." She moved closer to the blonde.
Betty turned the radio around to the back. "What does this mean?" She whispered mostly to herself as her fingers traced the knife cute words.
Veronica leaned a little closer towards the window. Her breath hitched as her eyes caught the carvings. How did I miss this? I stared at this for a while after mom showed it to me. How did I miss this? Her eyes lifted to meet Betty's unreadable ones. "What to ask my mom?" She got out.
Betty shook her head. "No." She forced out. Her fingers tracing the craving as her eyes stayed glued to Veronica's. Her fingers comitting to memory the I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU HERMIONE; YOURS FAITHFULLY HAL.
"Hello girls." Hermione said with a smile as she leaned against her daughter's door frame.
Veronica looked quickly over at her mother; then back at Betty.
Betty didn't seem to have heard Hermione.
Hermione's brows furrowed in confusion. Usually Betty said hello to her. Her eyes drifted down to Betty's lap; and her eyes widen as she saw Betty's fingers tracing the back of the radio. "Oh God." She stepped into the room and made her way to sit at the foot of the bed. "Betty; it's not what you think it is." She spoke in a soft gentle voice. "Your father and I were never lovers. We never felt romantically towards one another. What we felt for one another was more like brother and sister. Hal gave me this radio on my eleventh birthday …. he thought it was a swell idea to crave his message against the plastic." She softly smiled. "Hal at the time loved craving things into things that he gave me; Freddie; his parents."
"My dad still loves doing that for us kids." Betty breathed easier as the truth of what Hermione said ranged through her soul.
