Disclaimer: I do not own Gundam Wing nor its characters. They belong to their creators/publishers whoever they may be. I'm too lazy to look that information up myself at the moment. I am not making any profit from this.
Note: Just another little ficlet I wrote back in 2000. The ending is a little corny, but we all need a little corny sometimes. This was originally posted on the GWML.
This Bright Sunny Day
by Agent Rock
Duo sat at the window, staring out at the various creatures roaming about. It was one of those rare times when they were all together, and there was no mission to complete. Everyone had gone out to enjoy their free time off, everyone that is except for himself and Heero. Duo might as well have been by himself seeing as Heero had spent the last hour off in some other room. Duo didn't mind much though; he seemed to be enjoying the quiet this bright sunny day.
Bright, warm sunlight poured in through the window and onto Duo's face. It was so warm and comforting, and Duo found his mind wandering. He found himself thinking about his fellow pilots, and how much time they had spent together. Actually, it really hadn't been all that long, but you'd be surprised at how close people can grow during times of war, especially while fighting side-by-side.
Yes, they were all connected by the ties of war, and, even though they might not always show it, or even admit it, they all cared for each other deeply. Friends? No, more than that. Brothers? No, still more. I don't think one could really compare their relationship to anothers. I think it was the sort of thing that only comrades in war could understand. They'd all been through so much together, how could they not be close?
Heero. Heero was cold and emotionless, at least so he seemed. It was like he wasn't even human, rather a machine used for the sole purpose of killing. Duo didn't mind much, though. Heero was his best friend (whether Heero liked it or not) and regardless of how Heero acted, he could never change Duo's feelings. Duo had even contemplated that perhaps he cared for him as more that just a friend or comrade, but he didn't really concentrate on that. There was a war going on, no time for things like that.
Perhaps after the war he'd be able to sort out his feelings, and, if his suspicions prove true, then he might act upon them.
But for now, Duo was contented with what he had. He had Heero for a friend, and even though Heero didn't really show it and others would call him nuts for thinking so, he knew that Heero considered him a friend as well. And that made him happy.
Duo heaved a long sigh of contentment staring out the window this bright sunny day. A couple of cars pulled up, Quatre and Trowa in one, Wufei in the the other. As they were getting out, Duo smiled to himself. "My friends...." he thought.
Heero walked into the room and tapped Duo on his shoulder. "Hm?" Duo asked, still a little dazed from his thoughts.
"They're back. Let's go eat lunch," Heero said and started walking back the way he came. Duo could've swore he saw a shred of caring in his eyes, as if he had been thinking the same things that Duo had been. Duo smiled and jumped out of his chair.
"Coming!" Duo said cheerily, running after Heero. He flung his arm around Heero's shoulder as they both went out to greet the others.
"Yeah," Duo thought, "I'm glad that I have my friends, this bright sunny day."
