A/N: A random, short double drabble. This was supposed to be a reply to a challenge via the Great_Tales comm over on livejournal, but alas, it wouldn't fit in only 80 words. The first time I've actually written anything Tolkien based in ages, so concrit is welcome!

Legolas stood on the water's edge, gazing out over the lapping waves. Longing stirred in his chest as the gulls circled above him, their haunting cries echoing across the waves and sand. They were calling him, Legolas knew. Calling him home.

"Legolas?"

Gimli appeared beside him, his sturdy presence grounding Legolas and bringing the elf back to the here and now.

"Preparing yourself to lose our little game again, I see," Gimli said, in a tone far less smug than was usual. Legolas knew that it was the dwarf's attempt to goad him, to draw his thoughts away from far off places, and he appreciated the attempt far more than he could say.

"No indeed," he replied, still looking out over the waters. "In fact I was considering the best way to console you, master dwarf, when you lose."

Gimli sputtered in mock indignation, grumbling under his breath about elves and their nonsense. Legolas laughed, glancing down at the dwarf with a hint of fondness and gratitude in his eyes.

With one final, longing glance seaward Legolas turned away.

Someday, his heart whispered, but not yet. For now his place was here.

"Come, Gimli, there is work to be done."
