She's watches as the laser red light focuses on his back. Her body moves without her realizing it, but it's too late.

For days he refuses to get out of bed. He watches the news, watches as the Brotherhood, the group he'd created, he'd trained, the cause he'd believed in, goes on without him. Like nothing had changed.
And all the while she sits by him. She doesn't speak, doesn't try to make him eat, or rest, or move around. She just watches him sadly, grieving his grief for what he'd lost.

She takes him away, to a secret place, far from society. It's a quiet place.
She sets up a life for them there. She cooks, she cleans, she takes whatever form he asks of her. She knows he isn't happy, she knows he misses the life they used to have, the power of it. But she always smiles for him, obligingly takes care of his every need. She never complains.
But she always hopes. She hopes that one day, maybe, he won't miss the power, that he'll be happy again. That maybe someday she'll be enough.

When the cure finally wears off, he thanks her for taking care of him, then without hesitation walks right out of the life she's built for them to go back to the life they'd had. He doesn't even look back to see if she follows.

Three months later they perfected the cure. Guaranteeing that it won't ware off this time.
This time she moves fast enough to step between him and the little red laser light. She cringes on the ground (she didn't realize how much it hurt) and watches his back as he walks away, and she realizes that even if the cure had never worn off, he would have never been happy in the quiet life she'd always craved for them.
As he leaves, he doesn't even say goodbye.
