The sun was setting, ending a wonderful, crime-free day at Jump City. As if by instinct, the fearless leader of the Teen Titans climbed up the rooftop of the T-shaped tower located on a small island on Jump City Bay, wishing to be alone. But what he got was better than alone. Far better.
She was there.
The girl was hugging her knees to her chest, staring at the dancing lights above the horizon, threatening to disappear any second. They have always watched the sunset together. How could he have forgotten? He stalked behind her, making sure no sound was made. The strong gush of wind further drowned his footsteps.
"Hey," He broke the silence.
"Greetings, Friend Robin," It seemed liked she knew he was there all the time.
"Nice, huh?"
"Indeed. The setting of your planet's main source of light is most exhilarating!" An obviously fake smile plastered on her face.
"Something wrong, Star?" He knew something was.
"Wrong? Nothing is wrong! Everything is wonderful! Why would something be wrong?"
"Starfire, you're my best friend. You know that, right?" She obviously wasn't going to give in that easily.
"Yes.."
"So you know that you can tell me anything, right?"
"Yes," She anwered, fiddling her fingers on her lap.
"So, what is it?"
No reply. She just sat there, staring at the darkening horizon. Eventually, he did so, too.
"Starfire?" Robin couldn't stand the silence, but all he heared was a muffled sob. 'She's crying! He hated it when she cried; he couldn't stand the sight of her in that condition! All he could do was offer his best friend a comforting hug. She readily accepted it, soaking his shirt with tears. They just sat there, legs swaying on the edge of the roof. By this time, the sun had already set. A slight storm brewed overhead, small raindrops made their way down, getting stronger by the second until an all-out downfall was falling.
"Star, its getting cold, wanna' come in?" He said, motioning to the door leading downstairs.
She shook her head, "No, you go." Starfire looked up at Robin with watery eyes full of concern, "You might catch the 'cold'. I prefer staying here. Thank you for the company," After all, Tamaraneans DO have a stronger body metabolism that humans.
"Well then, I'm staying too." Robin stretched out his arm for another one of their 45-minute hugs, being as stubborn as always.
They sat there in complete silence, watching the waves crash on the shore beneath them. The rain soaked every inch of their clothing, but they couldn't have cared less.
"So, now you're gonna tell me?" He asked as Starfire eventually calmed down.
"Tell you what?" Her small brows crunched up together, making it seem like she forgot--she didn't, and apparently, he didn't, too.
Robin gave her a knowing look. One he knew she couldn't resist. No one could.
"Very well.." she paused, "..she...she's gone, Robin." She started crying again.
"What? Who?"
'Gone? That can't be good.' Robin thought.
"My mother!" she was on her feet now, towering above the Boy Wonder, "She's dead! The only person in this entire universe who cared for me is dead!" Starfire's knees suddenly gave way; her whole body immediately collapsed on the hard cement floor.
"I'm all aloneā¦"
Robin was shocked by her sudden outburst. But regaining his composure, he immediately reached over to her, comforting the foreign princess as much as he can.
"That's not true, Star. We're here--Raven, Beastboy, Cyborg..the whole city!"
"...I'm here. You're not alone, you'll never be."
