A/N: I wrote this about two years ago, and hadn't posted it till now cause I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue on it or not. Well, that and the fact that I had completely forgotten about it...Teehee?
I dont own any of the characters.
I watched the clouds drifting away
Still the sun can't warm my face
I know it was destined to go wrong
You were looking for the great escape
To chase your demons away
The warm air was not charged with happiness, as it should have been. There were no smiles of joy and glee on any of the surrounding faces, just muted sorrow held at bay by gripped fingers. No softly spoken words filtered through the air, only the chirping of birds as they perched on the trees near by.
But Sakura heard nothing, saw nothing except the name as it was carved into stone. One name, which deserved to not be there, deserved to never be there.
"Come, Sakura, say your good-bye's." Kakashi whispered beside her, urging her forward by her elbow.
Slowly, misty green eyes turned upward to look into Kakashi's. Reality seemed far from where she was standing, as if it had left her completely.
"No, I don't . . . want to." The words seemed foreign to her as they passed through her lips. It wasn't true, so there was no need to say her finally good bye. She would wake in the morning to find that it had all been some horrible joke gone wrong, and he would still be there to greet her with this usual smile and cup of coffee. Because that was the way it had been for the last year, with her waking up to see his warm smile.
With a soft jerk, Sakura freed her arm from Kakashi's hold and took a few steps backward. Her eyes moved from that of Kakashi's to once again stare at the stone monument. Never in her dreams had she thought that this day would come, because he would outlive her. He would be the one standing there, not her. And even then, he would be old and gray, barely standing even with the help of his would be trusty cane.
They were supposed to grow old together, he had promised her that.
In a daze, Sakura shook her head at the stone, as if telling it that it was a liar and she knew the truth. That he was still out there somewhere. "Kakashi."
Kakashi, who had been standing silent beside her, nodded his head in understanding. There were no words he could give her to help ease her pain, it was one of those things she would have to do for herself. With one last look at the stone, and a gentle pat on her shoulder, he turned and left her there to grieve alone.
Sakura barely felt his hand touch her shoulder, but she did feel the cold when it left. She stood there for a moment longer, just staring at the name on the stone, before she too turned and walked away.
"I will keep you with me, Naruto. . ."
