Disclaimer: I do not own Elisabeth.

A/N: Another Elisabeth one-shot from me. Note that this is based mostly off the Essen production.

I smooth the fabric of my pristine white wedding dress nervously. Franz Josef is laughing at something. Perhaps someone has told a joke. I laugh along, and all of a sudden the large supper table falls silent, and everyone starts looking at me. Apparently, I failed to notice that the joke had been a more man-themed joke. My cheeks flush scarlet and my eyes focus on the plate of food in front of me. Out of the corner of my eye I can see my mother-in-law's glaring at me viciously.

"It's an old story, but new for me

two men love the same girl- you.

You've already chosen. I am the loser.

I'm only a guest at your wedding.

You turn away from me, but you only pretend.

You would be loyal to him but you have been wanting me.

He holds you in his arms, but you smile at me

And where that will lead to, you know as well as I do."

My thoughts turn to what Death had told me. It isn't true. I do not love him. Then why did I ask him to stay after my near-fatal fall a few months ago?

"The last dance belongs to me!

The last dance I dance only with you!"

Now I understand what Death meant, and there is no why I possibly prove him wrong. As everyone lives, everyone dies. I am no exception. No! I don't want to die and be at his mercy. I belong to entirely to me. But I can't live forever.

"Time becomes old and tiresome.

The wine becomes stale.

The air is sultry and stifling

In this Hall of Mirrors.

Invisible eyes look at us

While everyone waits for the rendezvous."

Then again, who is to say that the Kingdom of the Dead isn't better than the mortal life? Perhaps there I would be truly free. Death knows me better than anyone else now, in the short time we have been acquainted. Surely he knows that that would make me happy.

"And I am waiting in the dark, and always look at you

and seem the big loser,

but I know I will win

the last dance!"

I think that when the time comes I will allow him to have the last dance…
