Rainy Day

"I love you, Amon," Cher whispered as she woke to see Amon propped on his elbow staring down at her. She had said it before she could stop herself. She must have still been a little drunk. Or maybe it was him that made her feel so confident.
"You liar," he replied casually, as if her confession meant nothing, when really his heart had turned over in his chest. "You've known me less than a month. We hardly know each other."
"You're right. I don't know why I said it." His nonchalant attitude put her somewhat at ease and she allowed a smile to cross her face. "I still remember that day…"
One month earlier…Cher Degre held the soggy newspaper over her head in the pouring rain in a vain attempt to keep herself from getting even more soaked, if such a thing were possible. Her head was kept down, trying to keep the harsh pelt of the rain from her face. And while she couldn't really see but two feet in front of her, she was still surprised when she walked straight into a brick wall. Shocked by her own stupidity, she was barely ever to brace herself for impact on her quick decent to the sidewalk. She was even more surprised when something caught her and jerked her upright.
She landed hard against his chest, his hand wrapping around her waist to give her balance, and it took a moment for her to realize that someone had bumped into her and then saved her from the fall. Cher looked up, her newspaper forgotten, to see the most handsome man she had laid eyes on. His eyes were intense as they stared into her own, but his expression gave away nothing. For a moment, just one intense moment, they stood together in the rain staring at each other, so close to the other that one could feel the other's heartbeat.
"Yeah… you looked like a drowned sewer rat," Amon quipped flatly, breaking her from her reverie.
"You didn't look much better," Cher retorted.
Then her senses came back to her. She fully realized what had happened and she jerked out of his grip by shoving at his chest. "Excuse you! Do you usually just bump into people and make them almost break their necks? Now my suit is ruined!"
"I should have let you fall," he muttered and began to walk off.
"And now you're just going to walk off! Without as much as an apology?" she called after him.
"I suppose I could give you a ride, since I'm feeling generous today." He almost let the smirk he felt tugging at the corners of his mouth show. This woman was beyond beautiful, and he wouldn't mind at all taking the chance of spending a few more minutes with the blonde bombshell.
"It was you that invited me inside that day. You'd do well to remember that," he shot back.
"I said you didn't look much better. I didn't say you weren't mildly appealing." She let the slight admission slide and leaned up to steal a kiss from his lips.
That smile was tugging at his lips again. "Go back to sleep. It's the middle of the night, and you have a big day with Cheza tomorrow." When she had turned back over and she was sure she was asleep, Amon leaned over and kissed her temple. "I love you too, Cher."
And even though she wasn't meant to, she heard his words anyways.
