He watched.
All he ever did was watch.
He watched her stumbling, just recently getting off the walking cast. Carlisle had gotten her a brace so she had full mobility, yet the still weak bone was supported. She collapse and gave up to lay down beside him.
And he ached.
He ached to feel her pain, he wanted so badly to take every burden she ever had to bear and carry them, so he could protect her. But he knew she would never allow that. She had already said if he was going to get her anything for her birthday, she wouldn't have to rip him to shreds, she said she'd refuse to talk to him for a week, not out of fear, like the rest of the school, but out of spite. And that itself, that loss of contact, loss of her, would destroy him.
He knew one day it would come. She would finally be scared of something, something would happen and she would leave. But not now, and not yet.
She had faced the tracker and spat in his face, she had accepted the possibility of her death with more ease than one would accepting a glass of water from a waiter. They say the truth shall set you free, he smiled at her remembering the truth he revealed in this very meadow. They lay together, like most sunny afternoons, in the peace and serenity of their meadow. She curled up to his marble chest and nuzzled his lower jaw, instinctually he moved his head to get a better look at her face and smiled. Her eyes were closed and a look of pure bliss was on her face.
Alice had seen them leaving. Soon. So soon. She had seen them in this very meadow, heart breaking, her heart shattering enough for the both of them. She saw him walking away, chest collapsing in pain, indescribable pain from the loss of her. His true love.
He couldn't stand seeing it, but had come to the conclusion that he was going to prepare them with as many good memories as possible.
They had ventured into Port Angles for the morning for an early lunch, and ended up in the meadow like most afternoons when the sun decided to come out. Emmett and Rose had gone off for the summer, since they 'graduated', Alice and Jasper sporadically went north to Denali, but spent most of the time in Forks.
And he had spent most of his summer in this very spot, with Bella curled up around his side, a leg casually resting on his, her foot only reaching his calf. Her head tucked under his chin, her scent now his personal ambrosia.
He had once described her as his own personal heroin. But she was so much better than that. She was pure ecstasy, waves of love emanated from her so strongly he was astonished by the acceptance this tiny human had for a monster like him. How could an angel destined for so much, decide on him. Beauty and her beast. Her stone marble beast.
And so he ached.
And so he watched
"What are you thinking about?" The lilting tone of said angel, "Edward?"
"Bit of everything I guess," He smiled down at her, kissing her forehead gently and sweetly as he could, pressing love and the passion he held for her, in that one kiss. "You and me I guess Bella."
"Mm, that's nice." she sighed into his shoulder. She nuzzled his lower jaw and fell asleep.
