My best friend gave me the best advice

He said each day's a gift and not a given right

Leave no stone unturned, leave your fears behind

And try to take the path less travelled by

That first step you take is the longest stride

Sometimes, knowing that Michael was gone for good was especially hard. I'd really thought that despite my screw-ups, we'd still have a chance together. Guess I was wrong there then.

If today was your last day and tomorrow was too late

Could you say goodbye to yesterday?

Would you live each moment like your last?

Leave old pictures in the past

Donate every dime you have?

If today was your last day

Before he died, he spoke to me. Only the once, and only for a few moments, but it was all I'd needed. It took away the anger I felt towards that damn disease for taking him away before I'd even gotten him back again.

Against the grain should be a way of life

What's worth the prize is always worth the fight

Every second counts 'cause there's no second try

So live like you'll never live it twice

Don't take the free ride in your own life

Strange, how the song he asked me to play after he was gone so reflected his final moments; how it managed to make me smile through the tears that cascaded down my cheeks; how it persuaded a brief chuckle around the lump in my throat.

If today was your last day

And tomorrow was too late

Could you say goodbye to yesterday?

Would you live each moment like your last?

Leave old pictures in the past

Donate every dime you have?

I smiled a little more, seeing how much the song reflected the man. He was the kind of man who would leave old pictures in the past, donate every dime he had no matter whether he could live off what was in the cupboard or not.

Would you call old friends you never see?

Reminisce of memories

Would you forgive your enemies?

Would you find that one you're dreamin' of?

Swear up and down to God above

That you finally fall in love

If today was your last day

He'd managed a little note with it, and I saw the relevance of it at this point. It simply said:

"You are that one."

If today was your last day

Would you make your mark by mending a broken heart?

You know it's never too late to shoot for the stars

Regardless of who you are

So do whatever it takes

'Cause you can't rewind a moment in this life

Let nothin' stand in your way

Cause the hands of time are never on your side

He'd always told me to shoot for the stars. Well, never quite in those words, but close enough. He'd always been able to see past the fact that I was a princess and very important and all that, and I loved him a little more every moment for that.

If today was your last day

And tomorrow was too late

Could you say goodbye to yesterday?

Would you live each moment like your last?

Leave old pictures in the past

Donate every dime you have?

Would you call old friends you never see?

Reminisce of memories

Would you forgive your enemies?

Would you find that one you're dreamin' of?

Swear up and down to God above

That you finally fall in love

If today was your last day

As the song drew to a close, I lifted my head, and wiped the tears roughly from my cheeks. I had a funeral to plan, a boyfriend to mourn momentarily, and then an awful lot of work to do. What he was trying to tell me was not to forget him, merely to move past him. And I would try my hardest to grant his last wish.
