Fade Out
-Verena's POV-
(Friday, January 8, 2016-3:45 pm)
[Barbaric Archipelago; Bog-Burglar Islands]
Ring. Ring. Ring.
I dashed out of my desk chair and over to my bed where I quickly picked up my phone while it was still on the charger from my nightstand. I checked the ID; Berk Dragon Training Academy. I took a deep breath to calm my nerves, then I slid the green icon over to answer, placing the device to my ear.
"Hello?" I said as gently as I was able without sounding too anxious.
"Hi. Is this Ver-Ren-Ah Vollan?" came a male voice on the other end.
"It's Verena. Pronounced like Serena, only with a V instead of an S. And yes, it's me," I corrected softly. It was not the first time people got my name wrong because mine is unique.
"Oh! My apologies, Miss. Vollan. I am calling from the Berk Dragon Training Academy. You submitted an application for employment last week, and we'd like for you to come for an interview on Monday, January 11th at 9 am."
"I will definitely be there. Thank you. Um, do I need to bring anything?" I inquired.
"Just yourself,"
"Okay, perfect. Thank you so much!" I chirped.
"We'll see you Monday. Have a good night."
The call ended as I set my phone down, then squealed with delight. "YES!" I laughed, then giggled excitedly while laying back on my bed. I sighed in relief. My door opened quickly as I sat up to see my Aunt Bianca standing there.
"Good heavens, Verena; I heard you scream from downstairs and in the backyard. What has you so happy?" Aunt Bianca inquired.
"I have an interview for the Berk Dragon Training Academy on Monday at nine!" I informed quickly.
"Good for you sweetheart. Your mother would be so proud of all you've accomplished," Aunt Bianca smiled. I did the same, sighing softly and looking at my nightstand where there was a picture of a woman with blonde hair and honey-brown eyes. My mother passed away giving birth to me in 1995, so her best friend, Bianca Boggs took me in as her own. This woman is basically my aunt, and she has a daughter who is three years older than me named Caitlyn Boggs. We grew up as sisters, and definitely the best of friends. I didn't know who my father was, and Auntie Bianca refuses to talk about him; she says he's a heartless jerk who broke my mother's heart. Anyway, Caitlyn doesn't live at home anymore. When Caitlyn turned eighteen; she moved to Berk after securing a job as the Mystery-Class Dragon Trainer for the Berk Dragon Training Academy.
Yes, real dragons! I don't have a bonded dragon, but Caitlyn does. She has a male Changewing that she calls Camo because these dragons can blend in with their surroundings. I'm hoping that if I get this job with Berk Dragon Training Academy, I can find a dragon of my own. The Berk Dragon Training Academy originated on the Isle of Berk, which sits in the middle of all the islands. Meathead Islands, Outcast Island, Island of the Quiet Life, Bog-Burglar Islands, Hysteria Island, Murderous Mountains, Isle of Bashem, Peaceable Country, Visithug Isle, Uglithug Territory, Wingmaiden Island, Caldera Cay, Lava-Lout Islands, Berserker Island, Vanaheim, Hunters Isle, and Shivering Shores. Our Mainland was to the East and called the Kingdom of Denmark, but our Archipelago was self-governing. Every island had a leader, and because Berk is the island that started the peace with dragons; that is our Archipelago's Main Island. So that's why the Berk Dragon Training Academy was such a big deal; they had the best of the best for employees and dragons.
"Thanks, Auntie," I replied.
"Now, I have to work Monday, so I can't take you to Berk. I'm sure Caitlyn wouldn't mind bringing you if you ask her?" Bianca suggested.
I nodded, then Aunt Bianca left the room. I pulled out my phone and texted Caitlyn; I would have to thank her for this because it was Caitlyn's suggestion for me to put in an application at BDTA.
Cait! I got a call from BDTA. Interview 9am on 11th!{Delivered/Read; 3:51 pm}
I set the phone down afterward, trying to relax a bit and then decide what I would wear to the interview. Gods, I had nothing! I didn't even know what I was applying for; just that I'd love working there, and could learn anything. I heard a two dings sound as I checked the phone to see that Caitlyn replied.
That's great, Ver! Maybe I'll get to see u when you're on Berk. {Received/Read; 3:52 pm}
Well, there's a problem…Auntie Bianca can't bring me 2 Berk cuz she has work. Would it be possible for u to bring me?{Delivered/Read; 3:52}
I really hoped Caitlyn could help me out. I didn't want to miss this chance to work for the academy in some way; possibly find my dragon. I glanced down to see Caitlyn replying, then the gray bubble popped up.
Sure. I can come grab u w/ Camo as soon as I clock out 4. B ready 430 . U can stay the weekend at my place. {Received/Read; 3:54 pm}
Oh, thank the Gods! I smiled wide, replying with; Will do. Thank u so much, sis! After that, I hurried to grab my backpack so I could pack some clothes and anything I'd need to stay a few days at Caitlyn's apartment. This was going to be fantastic. I hadn't seen Caitlyn since Christmas, which was two weeks ago. Perhaps she could help me prepare for the interview process.

(5:15 pm)
[Isle of Berk; Caitlyn's Apartment]
Caitlyn was five foot eight inches with golden blonde hair and baby blue eyes; she was twenty-three years old, so a couple older than myself. I'm twenty-one; just turned on December 28th. Caitlyn's apartment was a one-bedroom with a small room that could be used as an office or storage space. The office area was turned into a guest bedroom. I guess I would be staying in there for the weekend, or possibly longer if I got the job. Caitlyn and I talked on the flight from Bog-Burglar to Berk about my living situation since I didn't have a dragon to get around with. Caitlyn said that if I was hired; I could stay with her until I had the money saved up to get my own place. Caitlyn and I grabbed dinner on the way to her apartment, then we made it inside to eat and catch up a little. I got squared away in the spare room; it had a twin bed, stand up four-drawer dresser, laptop desk basic chair, and a nightstand with a lamp on it between the wall and the bed. I heard a knock on the door frame and looked behind me to see Caitlyn there with a smile.
"I know it's not much," Caitlyn admitted.
"No! It's perfect, Cait! Well, for me it is. I don't take up a lot of space," I giggled some.
"I'm glad you took the suggestion to apply at the dragon training academy, sis. You're gonna love it!" Caitlyn exclaimed.
"Don't get my hopes up. It's only an interview…" I sighed. "And I don't even know what for,"
"What did you put on the application?" Caitlyn wondered.
"Anything available because I was a fast learner," I replied.
"Well, I know that rules out being a trainer and care specialist because you have to have experience in those departments. But you could get stable or nursery worker," Caitlyn shrugged. "Possibly secretary because I know there was an opening for that," she added, tapping her chin.
"I'd be happy with anything," I informed.
"Then you'll be okay. The academy isn't super picky about employees," Caitlyn stated.
"I'm just nervous I guess," I looked down.
"Hey, it'll be okay. You'll love the staff at BDTA, and the owner is a great guy," Caitlyn explained.
"I know; you've told me stories," I chuckled a bit.
"You know what, we should go out and celebrate!" Caitlyn suggested. I blinked a little.
"What for? I don't have the job yet," I enlightened.
"Did you use my name as a reference?" Caitlyn asked, and I nodded to her. "Then you have the job. So come on! Let's go have a couple drinks," I felt like there would be no getting out of this, so why not?
"Okay," I agreed. What would it hurt? And how often did I get the chance to hang with my sister at the bar now what I was of age to drink? Yeah, this would be great!
"We'll go a bit later," Caitlyn remarked. Well, tonight should prove fun, or at least I hoped it would be.

(8:35 pm)
[Dragon's Edge Bar]
Caitlyn and I decided to come at 8:30 pm because it seemed like a good time to arrive. The bar wasn't overly packed but looked busy regardless. Caitlyn and I sat at the edge of the bar together after getting our ID's checked, then the bartender made his way over.
"Evening, ladies! What can I get for you?" the man asked with a broad smile.
"Strawberry Daiquiri for me, please," Caitlyn ordered softly. "What do you want, Verena?"
"Oh, I don't know, Cait. I've never been to the bar before. I only turned twenty-one last Wednesday," I muttered, slightly embarrassed.
"Sex on the beach," Caitlyn told the man as he nodded and began preparing the drinks. "Trust me, you'll like it," she vowed. I nodded, trusting her word. A few minutes passed as the bartender returned with both drinks and placed them before us.
"Enjoy!" the man invited, then he continued to serve others. I took the drink and had a small sip; it was heavenly! My eyes widened as Caitlyn shot me a smug look that clearly said; told you so. I relaxed more now, taking a bigger drink. Yeah, this was definitely a good idea. Just me and my sister, out for drinks to celebrate my almost new job.

(9:20 pm)
[Dragon's Edge Bar]
Caitlyn and I were having a fantastic time. Caitlyn had to fly Camo, so she wasn't super drunk. Not that it mattered because Camo could just carry Caitlyn home on his back if she got smashed for whatever reason. Me, I've had two Sex on the Beaches, a shot, and now working on the remainder of my Strawberry Daiquiri.
"Shit," I heard Caitlyn say as I glanced at her.
"What's wrong?" I inquired.
"My boyfriend got into a car accident; his mom just texted me," Caitlyn informed.
"So go?" I told her.
"I can't leave you here," Caitlyn reminded.
"I'll be okay. I can take a taxi to the apartment. Cait. Go; Andy needs you," I urged.
"Are you sure?" Caitlyn asked. I nodded with a smile as she got off the bar stool and put down forty dollars to pay for the drinks we'd had so far, and a tip for the bartender, then hugged me before carefully making her way out of the establishment. I sighed a bit looking at my drink, then taking another sip. Caitlyn had been with Andrew Kingers for a little under a year; he was a nice man and very good to my unofficial sister. Caitlyn and Andrew met on the street one day, she spilled her coffee all over him and felt awful. I guess their eyes met and it was love at first sight. The two went on a few dates together, then Andrew asked her out on Valentines Day in 2015. I was happy for Caitlyn; I wondered if I'd ever meet a guy. I suppose it didn't matter right now. I was nowhere near ready to have a relationship until I got a job, and my living situation figured out.
Not to mention; I've had boyfriends in the past, and those didn't all end so great. I'm not a virgin either; I had sex for the first time on prom night with a guy who ditched me right before graduation from high school. It's been three years since then, and my last relationship ended just before I turned twenty, and that was one of the two who I didn't mind letting go because they were honest about things when it wasn't working out. So it's been a little over a year for me since having someone. I suppose it gets lonely, but what can I do. I meet guys all the time; just none of them strike my fancy I guess.
Well, I'm here alone now. I'd probably finish this drink, then head out back to the apartment. However, I might as well take my time. Or maybe I'd order one more, who knew. I was relaxed right now, and at least there were people around whereas if I went to Cait's place; I'd be sitting by myself until she returned. Maybe I'd make a new friend.
. . .
(10:30 pm)
[Dragon's Edge Bar]
I probably should have stopped after Caitlyn left. Having a Pineapple Upsidedown Cake followed by a Vodka-Cranberry wasn't a good idea. I couldn't see all that clearly anymore, and I need to get back to Caitlyn's place. I paid for my two drinks and left a tip. I got up slowly and went to exit the building.
"Hey, what's a pretty thing like yourself doing in here alone?" asked a rough male voice.
"I, uh, my sister here," I managed.
"Why don't you hang for a bit with us?" the man offered.
"No tanks. M'okay," I replied preparing to walk again. One stood and reached for her hand, stopping her movements. "Please, let go,"
"Come on, babe," the guy pulled her near his table where he and his friends sat. I tried to pull away, and the male's grip tightened.
"Release me…" I stated again. The male refused to let go. Suddenly, I felt an arm go around my waist and draw me close to another figure behind me. I got scared and nervous as I looked to see a slightly blurred male who had auburn hair and green eyes.
"Get your hands off my girlfriend," the young man said firmly, making the older male leg go of my hand.
"She ain't yours," replied the older guy.
"Says who?" the younger remarked.
"You just showed up," stated another.
"I was at the bar with my hood up sitting next to her. She's mine, so screw off," the male countered. So this was the guy sitting beside me with his hood covering his face? The guy showed up about fifteen minutes after Caitlyn left and ordered a couple drinks in the last hour, but he never said a word to anyone other than the bartender.
"Prove it," one man challenged. The guy shot me a look that said play along, and before I could contemplate what he meant; he leaned in and placed his lips to mine. For half a second, my eyes widened in surprise, but then I melted into it and kissed him back. The male deepened the action by sliding his tongue into my mouth and running it over mine. I reacted and not more than five seconds later; we were making out in the middle of the room in front of the table where those other guys were. My body did whatever it wanted, adjusting, so my chest was against his and wrapping my arms around his shoulder and behind his head.
"Ugh, okay. Get a room," the male groaned. The man broke the kiss, leading me out of the building and then around the side of it. Instantly, he pressed me against the brick wall and kissed me again; resuming precisely what we were doing inside. My mind was blank, and all I felt was how turned on I had become. This guy had set my body on fire with passion and a firm want and need more from him.

(10:45 pm)
[The Spot Motel]
We must have made out for fifteen minutes before I want you slipped out when this man's lips kissed my neck. Moments after that, the man told me he knew a place we could go. My vision was going, not in a bad way, but I was wasted and going Thor only knew where with a complete stranger who had me turned on. Across the street and three buildings down was a motel with a name; The Spot. Still kissing, the man got us through the door and received a room key without saying anything. The man guided me down the hall after glancing at the number on the tag connected to the key ring. Pushing me up against the door while hiking up my shirt a bit, he fumbled to get the key into the slot and turn the handle, but he managed. As soon as we were inside, he locked the door behind us and worked on getting my coat off while walking forward, which was me backward towards the bed. After I fell against it, the man was over me and after another kiss; everything seemed to fade out around me.
