(A/N: Just a little something I felt like throwing together while playing Wind Waker.)
Practice Makes Perfect
Somewhere on the busy island of Dragon Roost, a young Rito girl, half-bird, was frantic for a solution to her problem.
Medli was standing high up at the peak of Dragon Roost Island, playing her harp…badly.
"Oh man! What am I going to do? I've been practicing the song for hours and I still haven't gotten a single note right! It's only a matter of time before the island's ceremony…ohhh…I'm going to be the laughing stock if I can't play well at the ceremony!" Medli panicked to herself, her fingers stumbling clumsily over her harp.
The ceremony…It was an upcoming celebration for Prince Komali, who had just gotten his wings, and had now grown to be a fine young Rito. And Medli had been chosen to play a song to commemorate the once in a lifetime event.
"Okay, I know I can do this. I just have to keep practicing." She mumbled, breathed air, and ran her fingers over the harp again.
Some notes had been successful, though majority of the notes were off-key or played in bad timing.
Medli brought her palm to her face, and set her harp aside. Maybe her bad playing suggested that now was the time for a break?
Somewhere not too far off, young Komali was peeking out at Medli, holding a small, delicate pink flower in his hand.
Deep breath, Komali. You can do this. Just go up to her, say hi, give her the flower, and fly away… the infatuated boy thought to himself.
With a look of determination, Komali hurriedly walked up to the ledge where Medli was now relaxing.
"U-Um...hi Medli."
The Rito girl turned around, hearing the familiar voice.
"Oh! Komali, it's you. What brings you here today?" Medli asked.
Komali had his hands behind his back, waiting for the opportunity to give her his gift.
"Not much…Everyone is busy preparing for the ceremony, so there's not much for me to do. I heard you'd be playing a song at the ceremony too, how is that coming along?"
Medli heaved a great sigh, and shook her head.
"Oh, it's terrible…I'm not sure why, but I just can't play any of the notes right. It's so unlike me. I guess maybe I was never good at playing."
The boy's head perked up. Medli? Bad at the playing the harp? Did he hear her right?
"But Medli, that's not true at all! I've heard you play a couple of times before, and you sounded amazing. Surely enough, you could play this song to perfection with just a little more practice. Practice makes perfect, you know?"
"I've been practicing all week, Komali. I'm not getting any better. " Medli closed her eyes, feeling defeated by her own instrument.
Komali held his arms out, holding the flower in front of her.
"This is…for you, Medli."
"Huh?" A puzzled voice asked.
Medli's eyes flickered open to see a gorgeous flower in front of her face. A tiny smile appeared.
"I want you to have this…But, in return, you have to keep practicing, Medli! Because I know…I know that soon…You'll get it right. I'm sure of that."
She giggled, and accepted his offering.
"Thank you Komali, that was very sweet of you. And don't worry, I'll keep getting better at the song. I promise."
Medli stood up and gently walked over to where Komali was standing, and softly kissed his cheek. Komali's face suddenly grew red, and he looked away, smiling in embarrassment.
"Well, um, yeah. Please do. In the meantime, I uh, have to get going. I'll see you around, Medli!" Komali said, and spread his large pair of wings, and sprouted off into the pure white clouds of Dragon Roost Island.
Now alone, she picked up her harp once more.
The next day, Medli was back at the same ledge on Dragon Roost, her fingers strumming the soft strings of her harp.
Coming from it, was a sweet and serene sound, perfectly in tune.
Medli smiled to herself.
She was getting better.
