No Rest For The Wicked

Shadows.

He knows shadows. The breath of darkness lingering on his shoulder, shrouding his mind until he's hysterical with drunken hallucinations and tears swimming in his eyes.

Dark hair sweeps into his sight but he flicks it away, hunched over a desk and scribbling notes on a white sheet. White. To keep out any obscurity.

He drums his pen against the wood, a sickening rhythm echoing in his ears. He's numb, tingling all over, but he has always been immune to blows he's been dealt. The next one would be no different, surely.

A new girl arrives in town one summer afternoon, and he is intrigued.

He thinks she's different.

He really, truly does.

Blonde hair, doe eyes. The epitome of innocence. She was perfect for him. Or, that's what he thought.

Fighting gets so loud and obnoxious at one point or another.

They scream in each other's faces over a tiny disagreement, balling their hands into fists. She smacks him, leaves her mark on his cheek. He cups his face, but ultimately has no reaction.

::

Feet slipping, he stumbles out into the street. The door slams behind him, green wood shutting him out of what used to be his home—no. Her home.

There's nothing left to do but stare at the ground beneath his feet. The cold concrete. Gray.

Gray.

Gray.

Nearlynearlyalmost black.

He tries to think but he can't. The pit in his stomach is too much. Too overbearing. It blew his mind, little specks and stars dotting his vision as the world grew darker.

Darkness engulfing his mind and buckling his knees like a belt.

No one will come to the rescue. Heroes don't need to be rescued.

But don't they?

::

He's sluggish and unresponsive, moping silently as he drifts down the streets. He doesn't expect to run into her, but there she is in all of her wonderous glory.

The way she looks at him makes him feel like she spat in his face. Disgust and disapproving contorting her features into something that would haunt him.

"Hello." He looks away from her.

She runs before he can look back.

::

His heart breaks and darkness is ohsosuddenly the only thing he knows anymore.
