Nobody
Disclaimer: Unfortunately I do not own them or the lyrics to the song. If ownership ever comes up, I call first dibs.
A/N: I love Five For Fighting and see a lot of the characters in their songs. This song really hit me and made me realize how much I owe to my friends their support in my crazy life. Especially when I feel like a nobody. And I tend to understand the character of Steve better than Danny because the written character and my personality and quirks are so similar. Now on to the story. This is my first one and any mistakes are mine.
Catherine was gone. Somehow he knew she wouldn't come back. He knew he couldn't be mad at her for staying to find the boy. But he was hurting for what was gone. At that moment, he felt like a nobody. Everyone he had ever gotten close to left him.
For a reason he wasn't even sure why, he flipped on the radio as he settled into his recliner, reminded of his physical pain too. The Taliban had done some some good work on his muscles, leaving many bruises and cuts.
The DJ announced a song coming up by Five For Fighting and he smiled briefly. He liked the group. Some of their songs expressed how he was feeling at times when he couldn't voice them.
Steve stiffened as he heard the first few lines. They were hitting too close to home for him. But for some reason he paused when he heard the chorus. "I'm nobody without you…buddy."
Danny. His partner and best friend. Danny had showed him he wasn't a nobody. The short man had showed him that some people stuck around. Or flew halfway across the world just to save his sorry ass.
He swore softly as the tears stung his eyes as he let the song wash over him. He couldn't believe Danny had come for him. He truly was his brother. Which mean o'hana. And in that moment, the SEAL swore to himself he would never take that kind of deep friendship for granted. Danny loved him like a true brother and to him it was so comforting. Not that he'd ever tell anyone that. The blond man had never left him. Even when he had been wrongly put in prison for killing the governor and he had Rachel and Grace on a flight back to New Jersey so they could make another start together. Or when he had gone to North Korea with Jenna Kaye and Wo Fat had tortured him and killed Jenna. Danny had found him and brought him back. And the detective had still been there after he'd merely left him a note stating he was going to track down Shelburne and Wo Fat.
Steve snorted to himself. He didn't deserve any of that. But he was damn happy he had Danny. The short loudmouthed man had brought so much into his life that was good. Like his daughter Grace. He was beyond proud to be a surrogate uncle to such an amazing young lady. Yes, Steve McGarrett was a lucky man. He would miss Catherine like crazy and always love her and knew if she came back, he would keep her. But Danno… Danno made life better on a daily basis for him. He provided a security he had never had with another human being before.
He was brought out of his thoughts when his phone buzzed with a text from Danny. 'Grace and I are on the way with dinner' was all it said, but it made the tall man smile. His o'hana was coming for him. He was a somebody.
