A/N: Hellooo! I'm Amber, aspiring (all-be-it young and inexperienced) writer and MAJOR RWBY and Anime Fan. I have just recently adopted a story from NinjaMonkey3904, and I really wanted to get to work on it. Anyway, nice to meet you, hope you enjoy, and with no more to do, let's get on with it!

What the Rabbit Hides

Chapter 1: Invisible

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

The unconscious bodies of a group of bandits laying on the ground around her, Velvet Scarletina stood calmly, perhaps a little winded, in the middle of the whole affair, a merchant's carriage parked a little further into the forest.

The old merchant was smiling, a little painfully(having been punched in the gut and almost shot will do that to ya) at her as she approached the cart. Velvet had taken a solo-mission, which was simply to escort a merchant all the way through a forest. Her teammates were still at Beacon, her having left by herself so she could "earn more lien". Her teammates, although having seen through her ruse, let her go, believing that this might help with her self-doubting tendencies.

Her self-doubt had started getting a hold of her a while after the incident with Winchester, that first-year who had bullied and teased her during lunch. When she had returned to her dorm after the incident, (having no classes left for the rest of the day) she couldn't help but clutch her rabbit ear to her head, still being in pain from Cardin's assault a few minutes before. Naturally, her leader, having been sitting on her bed reading some magazine(which oddly looked like a PlayBoy magazine), noticed and questioned her.

When she was asked why she hadn't just stayed with the team, she had replied that she hadn't wanted them to get in trouble if something happened to her, because heaven knows her team was overprotective of her. Needless to say, they became even more protective of her, doing the exact opposite of what she wanted. Not that she complained, of course, she was wayyyyyy too shy to complain to them about it.

Velvet had left a little while after for a solo quest, determined to improve on her combat skills(even though her hand to hand was pretty damn good, as Coco had said) so she could at least get her mind off of things for a bit.

It was stupid, she knew that. There could have been Grimm hanging around, but luckily for the merchant, there weren't any, but instead just a few teen aged bandits in search of their next snag. She wasn't sure where they had come from, just that they had jumped the carriage a few moments earlier. Luckily for the merchant and unluckily for the bandits, Velvet was extremely skilled in hand-to-hand combat, having no physical weapon outside of her semblance to rely on.

Velvet's stride was a little more confident than usual, as she made her way back to the merchant's cart.

"Ya took 'em down in the nick o' time, girly! I had almost thought they had me! Honestly, these damn bandits are such a waste of combat ability, dontcha think?"

Velvet smiled shyly at the man, and opened her mouth to speak before the man's face fell as he glanced behind her, shouting a warning.

"Look out!"

As if by instinct, Velvet leapt out of the way, the fireball narrowly missing her, before she rushed at the bandit who was still awake, hitting him over the head.

It was supposed to knock him out. It really was. What happened instead, however, was strange and shocking to her.

Her hand was instantly enveloped by some green light, and she retracted it with lightning reflexes. She looked at her palm, shocked. Why the hell was her hand glowing? Why did it start glowing in the first place? How is this even possible? What's going on? All these questions flooded her mind. She panicked, looking back at the bandit in shock.

However, when she glanced at the bandit, she stepped back in shock, for he too, was glowing an ominous green. He screamed, clutching his heart, before falling to the ground immediately after, silent. The light faded, and she rushed to the boy, and sighed with relief when she checked for and felt a pulse in his wrist. She stood up, still in shock.

This was not the end of it, though.

"WHAT THE FUCK HAVE YOU DONE TO HIM?!"

Velvet looked back, noticing another bandit, who was still conscious. He shouted profanities at her continuously, while she panicked.

"YOU KILLED HIM, YOU MONSTER!"

Velvet backed away, holding her hands up defensively.

"I.. I didn't! He's alive, I checked!"

The teen rushed at her, clutching his arm, howling in rage. "Raaaaaaaaargghhh!" He slashed at her with his one good arm, narrowly missing as she dodged out of the way. She leapt at him, punching him when he left his stomach defenseless. The boy screamed at her in pure anger and agony, before rushing at her again, repeatedly throwing his fists and himself at her in a series of desperate attacks, all of which she parried efficiently.

"YOU'RE A MONSTER! A DEMON!" the boy shouted, trying to swipe her feet out underneath her with a simple kick.

"I am not! Velvet shouted, sending another kick that hit him square in the face, sending him back. Unbeknownst to her, he had another trick up his sleeve, and he shouted at her again, flashing red eyes before slashing at her, seemingly disappearing. Wait, if this was his semblance, why hadn't he used it before? The answer was clear to her when he reappeared a few feet behind her, seeming annoyed at the fact that his invisibility wore off so easily. So that's it. His semblance can only work for a short period of time.

He charged at her. She dodged, spinning out of the way, dealing a final blow to his head. He fell to his knees.

Velvet gasped, and watched as her hand glowed a faint green. She collapsed, leaning against the carriage, staring at her hands, horrified.

Nearly half an hour passed before either Velvet or the merchant spoke. The two were on their way out of the forest, the man driving the carriage while she sat next to him in fearful silence.

"So... judging from yer silence, that, " He gestured back with his head, "...wasn't supposed tah happen?"

"N-no..." Velvet stammered, her voice but a silent whisper, "...it- it wasn't..." She was still staring at her hands fearfully.

The merchant, David Fuller, stayed silent, keeping his eyes on the road, frowning. "Well, I can't say that I've seen that before, but maybe it could be a part of your semblance? Ya never know."

"Yes, but... my semblance allows me to copy other people's fighting styles and... it doesn't make any sense..."

Fuller was quiet. After a while, he spoke, stopping the carriage close to a small town. He smiled. "Well, here we are girly. Thanks fer yer help! Ah really appreciate it." Velvet giggled a bit, before she got out of her seat, taking out her scroll. "No problem sir."

A few days later...

Team CFVY was sitting in prof. Peach's class, the aforementioned teacher busy explaining a bunch of stuff about Grimm biology. Velvet was absentmindedly doodling on a piece of paper, muttering to herself constantly. With each passing second, her team grew more weirded out by her mumbling. Coco was watching her with a concerned but amused smile. "Is she okay?" she whispered to her other two teammates, looking more and more amused by the second.

Yatsu shrugged, looking all the more concerned for his friend and teammate, before looking up and scribbling down a few more notes. Fox just sat still, staring out in front of him silently.

Coco shrugged back, before looking at Velvet, who was muttering a little louder than before. "Hey, Velv? You okay?" Velvet didn't respond, instead she pushed down on her pen, scrawling faster.

"Velveeeeet." No response.

"Velvet!" Coco hissed, frowning. Velvet finally looked up, looking around her confusedly, her gaze falling onto her leader as she stared at her in a confused daze.

Unfortunately, prof. Peach heard her as well, and went silent, sharply turning her head to the fashionista. "Coco Adel, would you like to add anything? Perhaps to explain why you're disturbing my class?"

Coco shook her head, smiling uncomfortably. Professor Peach raised an eyebrow at her. "Uhh... No Ma'am. Sorry." She held up her hands in surrender, a strange, uncomfortable smile still plastered to her face. Peach turned, continuing her lesson like nothing happened. Coco sighed in relief, looking back at her friend, who was still busy muttering to herself as she kept scribbling furiously.

After what felt like forever, the class was dismissed and the team were walking back to their dorm in uncomfortable silence, Velvet still muttering to herself. "Hey, Velvet!" Coco raised her voice a little at the faunus, who wasn't paying attention to her surroundings at all. "Huh?" Velvet looked up, looking around as if this is the first time she had seen her team today. "Oh hey, guys, I didn't see you there."

Coco sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Velvet, it's 1:30 pm. We've been to like 4 classes already, and you notice us now?"

Velvet blushed, wishing that the earth could just open up and swallow her whole. "Oh! Sorry, I guess I was just a little out of it today. Sorry." Velvet looked next to her, taking in her teammates' faces one-by-one. Why were they staring(well, except for Fox of course, although he was still looking in her general direction) at her like she was some sort of alien from a different planet? "Umm... guys?"

Coco jumped back with a yelp. "Velvet?!"

Velvet grew even more confused. "What? What is it?" She half-panicked.

"Gah!" Coco shouted, shocked. "Y-you..."

Velvet grew anxious. "I what? Do I have something on my face?"

Coco stepped forward, still looking at her like she just grew a second head. "Velvet."

"Y-yes?"

"You just went invisible!" Coco exclaimed, eyes wide.

"WHAT?!"

HA! Seems like a nice place to finish of this chapter, dontcha think? Ah my god I love cliffhangers.

Anyhow, this was the first chapter of "What the Rabbit Hides", and I'm pretty satisfied. This is my first team CFVY based fanfiction, so please let me know if I did anything wrong in regards to the characters' personalities. Thanks in advance!

The next chapter will be uploaded next week, however, I just want to disclaim that I might not post anything after that for a few weeks, as I have exams coming up and I need to study, STAT.

By the way, Thanks a lot to NinjaMonkey3904 for letting me adopt this story! It was Ninja who had come up with the idea, and I really want you peeps to check 'em out, their stories are pretty damn good!

Disclaimer: I do not own RWBY, nor the characters involved.
