A\N 1: In this story Aaron and Emily stated to slolwy date after he left the White House. Now they are married and have three month old twins.

A\N 2: I've had an idea of Aaron running for President or Vice President for a few years. I've attempted a few times to write a story with either idea but it never seemed to work out quite right. So I was very intersted to see how Netflix would do it for season three. This story is going to be based on season 3. The first ten chapters will be based on the episodes. I may extend the story though further.

Spoilers: This chapter is based on 3.1 "#thesystemisbroken" so it is very similar and some lines are near identical to the ones on the show. There are also slight spoilers for events in later episodes.

Warnings: None

Chapter 1

Emily managed to successfully put down everything she was carrying before answering her cell phone. Fumbling for it in her purse she answered it on the last ring, "Emily Rhodes."

"Now you know I like Emily Shore better," Aaron's smooth voice responded on the over end of the line.

"Aaron," Emily smiled upon hearing her husband's voice "How's D.C. been in the two hours since you last called?" She joked.

Two weeks after Emily had given birth to fraternal twins River and Alexander, she had learned her mother's cancer had become worse. So, after much thought and discussion with Aaron she had decided to go to Tampa and take the twins with her. That had been almost two months ago.

"Em," Aaron began to get serious, "I know you need to look after your mother, but I want to see our children. You know I'd go to Tampa in a heartbeat if I could, but things are just to crazy here with the election campaign,"

"I know Aaron and I'm sorry," Emily knew how much her, and their twins being gone affected him, "But my Mom needs me here right now."

"Yeah I know," Aaron sighed. He didn't want to get angry with her, but he was beginning to lose his patience, every time they talked it seemed like Emily was prolonging her stay. He was afraid she was going to tell him she was moving to Tampa soon. "Look I have to go. I'll call you later. Kiss River and Alexander for me."

"We love you and miss you," Emily told him honestly.

"Yeah I love you too," Aaron responded as he hung up the phone.

Emily shook her head slightly before putting her phone back on the counter. She then turned to look at her three-month-old twins. "Daddy is a little upset we can't see him right now," She proceeded to unbuckle both twins out of their carriers. She couldn't believe how much they were changing all the time. River had been born with dark curly hair but in the three months since it had only gotten curlier. Along with her hair she was looking more and more like her father every day. Her brother Alexander who had been born bald was starting to get a thin line of dark hair on the top of his head. Alexander looked like both of his parents, having Emily's lighter skin tone and Aaron's nose and mouth.

"Was that Aaron calling again?" Carrie Rhodes asked her daughter as she walked into the living room and put River and Alexander down on a play mat.

"Yeah," Emily confirmed as she walked back into the kitchen to get her mother's mediation along with water, "He's frustrated we're still here," She told her mother as she returned into the living room and handed her over the pills and water. "But I need to be here taking care of you."

"Emily," Carrie looked at her daughter, "I'm fine. You downloaded that Uber app on my phone last night. I can use that to get to my appointments. I can have a nurse come and help me out if I need it. What you need is to get back to D.C. to your husband. Aaron is a fantastic man and he loves you very much. I have loved spending every minunte with my grandchildren, but Aaron is there father. And I suspect you want to get back to the White House."

"Mom," Emily sighed, "You did so much for me when I was growing up. Please let me look after you now. I need to know that- "She began to cry.

"Emily," Carrie whipped her tears away, "It's a mother's job to look after her children. I appreciate you wanting to look after me. I don't want you to waste any of your wonderful life though. You being here is causing a rift between you and Aaron. You need to go back to D.C. I promise I'll call you if things get worse."

Emily looked at her twins and thought back to when they left. They had changed so much since Aaron had seen them last. She could certainly understand how he could miss them. "You promise you'll call if you need anything."

"I promise."

"Emily!" Seth turned the corner and looked on in surprise as he saw his friend. "You're back!" He walked and gave her a hug, "Oh you have no idea how miserable Aaron has been without you here. I'm surprised he didn't yell from the rooftop you were coming back," He peered into the double strollers and smiled as he saw the visitors passes clipped onto both of the twin's outfits.

"Aaron doesn't know we're here," Emily explained to Seth, "It's a surprise. Our plane landed one hour ago, and I figured here would be the best place to go."

"Seth I- "Chief of Staff Mars Harper walked up to Seth but stopped suddenly when he saw Emily. "Emily Rhodes. I wasn't aware you were on the visitor's list today."

"I wasn't," Emily confirmed, "I know I should have called but I wanted to surprise Aaron."

"Well he will certainly be surprised," Mars confirmed, 'May I see the twins I've heard so much about?"

"Of course," Emily turned the stroller around, "River, Alexander, say hi to the man who convinced Daddy to go into politics."

"Aaron has made me very proud," Mars told Emily, "Now if you'll excuse me, I do have to go. I do hope you and Aaron can have dinner with me and my wife soon."

"We'd love that," Emily nodded her head.

"Well I'll let you go and see Aaron," Seth hugged Emily once again and continued to walk down the hallway.

Emily made her way to Aaron's office and stopped outside the closed door. She knocked and heard him say enter.

"Hey," Emily walked slowly into the office.

"Emily!" Aaron looked up completely stunned, "Uh... that'll be all Adam," He dismissed the young intern he was talking to.

"Yes Mr. Shore," Adam quickly left the room closing the door on his way out.

"Emily," Aaron walked towards her and pulled her into a passionate kiss, "Please tell me you're staying," He looked at her as their lips parted.

"Yes, we're staying for now," Emily confirmed.

"River and Alexander," Aaron's smile widened as he looked down at his son and daughter, "They've grown so much," He took them both out of the stroller and carefully carried them over to the couch. He kissed them and looked at them and then looked back up at Emily, "Thank you."

Emily walked over to the couch and sat down beside her husband, "You're welcome. I'm so glad you told me the story about your last name. River is really the best tribute and the perfect name for our daughter. She looks just like you."

Aaron had struggled with his heritage for a long time. He didn't want anyone to think he had gotten to where he was just because he was Hispanic. On that note before he applied for college, he changed his last name from Rivera to Shore. He had told Emily the reason why when hey were engaged and she was going to meet his mother. A year and a half later when they had found out Emily was pregnant; he had begun to feel prouder of his heritage and less ashamed. He knew he wanted to tell his child all about their Mexican heritage. When he and Emily were discussing names, he suggested the name River for the girl as a tribute to his father's last name.

"She does," Aaron gently kissed his daughter, "Oh, I want to hold them all day, but I have work to do." He sighed in frustration.

"We'll stay for half an hour; I'll feed them and then take them back to the condo. I'll wait up for you tonight. Maybe have a nice romantic dinner prepared," Emily gave him a slow kiss that made him want more.

"Emily," He moaned out her name just as she took her lips away from his and the door knocked.

'Come in!" Aaron called out.

"I heard a rumor we had special visitors in the White House today," Tom Kirkman smiled as he walked into the room. When both Aaron and Emily stood, he gestated for them to sit back down, "Emily, how's your mother doing?" He asked,

"She's doing alright Sir. She convinced me I was needed more here. As soon as I can find a nanny for the twins I'd like to come back to work if that's alright Mr. President."

"I'd be delighted," Kirkman smiled at her. He had hated seeing how upset Aaron had been when she was away. He too had been missing her in a way. She had always been is moral compass which he felt like he needed more than ever now. "May I hold one of the twins?" He asked.

"Of course, Sir," Aaron nodded.

Tom took Alexander from Aaron's arms and held him. When Emily and Aaron had told him, they wanted to honour Alex by naming their son Alexander he ahd been beyond touched, "Alex would have loved them and spoiled them so much." He smiled sadly, "Are you able to stay long Emily? I know Penny would just love seeing you and the twins again."

"I'd be delighted to see Penny again Sir."

"Good, in the meantime please feel free to get to work if you wish. I'll give you back your full clearance level."

"Thank you, Sir," Emily nodded her head.

"I have a meeting to get to, but I'll let you know when Penny comes back from school," Tom handed Alexander to Emily and left the room.

"Well since I'm staying, I'll contact the nanny agency we were considering before and set up some interviews for this week." Emily got out her cell phone.

"It'll be great having you back at work," Aaron kissed her again, "It's just amazing seeing you again."

Emily smiled seductively up at him, "If we want to have that romantic dinner you should probably get back to work. I don't want you to have to stay late," She gave him another short kiss on the lips."

"Emily," Aaron shook his head in fake annoyance, "I'm not sure how much work I'm going to be able to get done now."

Emily grinned and shrugged, "I know."

Aaron rolled his eyes and kissed her again before putting River back in the stroller and going back to his desk to continue working.
