Happily Ever After?
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today ..." the voice began to drone.
'Oh god, I cannot believe I'm doing this. Is this a dream? I look over at him and I wonder, does he really love me? Can we make this happen?'
Celes blinked, casting her blue eyes onto her husband-to-be. He was handsome, in a masculine way, shoulders not too big or broad for supporting her head in those quiet moments; waist not to large for embracing. He had fine legs, sharp eyes, a wonderful voice that sent shivers down her spine. How could she not want to marry him?
Had he not promised to support her, cherish her, and love her? Had he not proven that in the fight against Kefka? Of course! Had he not told her he loved her singing voice, even though she thought she was horrible? Had he not offered his hand in marriage with no strings attached? So why what she nervous?
The minister droned on and on, intoning the virtues of her beloved; admonishing her to love him and honor him. Did he think she did not love him? She was marrying him after all! Oh yes, let us not forget what he had to promise. Humph! As if he could or would forget!
Behind her in the hall were her friends. She had seen their happy faces as she walked up the isle. Lovely green-haired Terra; Sabin who actually wore a suit and tie for the occasion. Shadow and Gogo off to the side and Strago and Relm sitting in the front row, Relm's pencil sketching madly. Celes could hear the gentle skritch skritch of the pencil as it flowed over the paper. She hoped that Relm was not going to cause trouble with her artwork.
On her husband-to-be's side of the chapel was King Edgar in his finery. He had never looked as handsome as he did today, a gentle if somewhat jealous smile playing across his sensuous lips.
'Edgar is on his best behaviour,' Celes thought with a wistfully silent sigh. 'Would that he could always be so tame.'
Next to him was Bannon and others of the Returners, including young Gau. He too had donned more fitting clothing for today's festivities. Yes, that was the attire that they had purchased for him that day he was to meet his father.
'Too bad that didn't work out, but he was mad, insane. Gau deserves better,' she thought.
Behind them was Umaro, his long white coat combed to smooth perfection and his dear friend Mog the Moogle next to him. It was good to see these two old friends here to share her joy!
"If no one here has any objection why these two should not be joined in marriage, let them speak now ..."
'Yes, let them speak, but not today. Never today. Let silence rein in their tongues lest feelings be hurt and all plans go awry,' Celes prayed, holding her breath. But no one spoke.
"Then before the great creator, and before these here as witnesses, I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride," the preacher told the groom.
He turned and gently removed Celes's lacy white veil, gazing intently on her pristine complexion, her icy blue eyes. He took her into his arms and kissed her and Celes wondered how long it would be before she could convince Cyan to shave off his mustache.
