A Whisper In the Wind

This is the first time he was in her room.

A small candle was lit in the corner table, its flickering light casting a welcome glow around the untidy room. Clothes and books littered the wooden floor.

His eyes were unmoving, focused on the small figure sprawled across the bed.

He could never understand why he loved to watch her while she slept. Perhaps it was the serene calmness which captured her face; her dreams drawing her away from the horrors of reality. Perhaps it was the slight whistling noise which she made, while her vibrant hair flowed like a curtain of flame around her head. Perhaps it was the way she scrunched up her nose if a strand went inside her nose.

A slight movement of the sleeping girl caused him to sink back into the shadows. He knew he could not afford to let her see him. He knew the moment he saw her eyes, he would lose his will-power.

He could hear the rain falling steadily outside the window. He felt closer to Nature today, it seemed She knew how his heart was feeling.

He removed a small velvet box from within his tattered robes and flipped it open. A small ring, with a single emerald glowed from the candlelight. In beautiful curved writing, the word Lily remained etched on the inner surface. He looked at it for a moment, and then placed the open box on the bed-side table.

He looked at her again. A small tear fell off his eye. He knew he wouldn't survive tomorrow. And he knew this would only increase her pain. But he felt, she ought to know. That if Fate had allowed, there wouldn't have been anyone else.

Putting his hand inside one of his inner pockets, he took a single parchment. It was folded once. After placing it beside the ring, he turned towards the sleeping figure. Tucking a strand of hair behind her eyes, he saw that she smiled in her sleep.

His heart clenched in agony, he struggled to keep his composure. Slowly he walked towards the open window.

He turned towards the bed, his voice carried like a whisper in the wind, as he allowed himself to be swallowed in the rain.

I am sorry, Ginny.
