More Precious: Mother and Daughter
I, Floare Uix Black, am lying in my death bed at just the tender age of eighteen. My life seems to be flashing in my mind, like an old movie projector playing its last roll of film.
I see myself at the age of twelve when I first met him, Regulus Arcturus Black. Little did I know then that he would become my whole world, and I his.
My mind rails to the years after that meeting, bringing it to our wedding that was just last year. It was also the last time I saw him, but not before he gave me a gift, a gift of life. A life that I will not be able to see grow. I will never know if she will look like me or her father. Whose wit she will have or whose spirit.
A sound brings me out of my thoughts, a little cry from the corner of the room in a white crib with delicate hangings.
I rose from the bed, almost losing my balance, but standing my ground as I made my way to the crib. Lifting the little bundle of purple, I hold her close and whisper, "My little gift, you will never know your father or how great of a man he was. You will never know me after this night, but remember we love you and that we never abandoned you. You're more precious than any diamond or pearl."
I paused for a moment, looking down at my little gift. Her dark eyes stared up at me as if trying to tell me that she understood what I said. I smiled, brushing a finger across her cheek.
"In all creation, all things great and small, you are the one that surpasses them all. I love you, Tessa Arcturus Black."
Sixteen Years Later
It's my sixteenth birthday today, the day that makes me think about my parents more than any other. I faintly remember the words my mother spoke to me as a baby. My Aunt Bella tells me stories about them. And I know what you're thinking: Bellatrix Lestrange telling stories? It seems Aunt Bella has a soft spot for me as well as my cousin Candace Black.
She told me that I have my mother's eyes and my father's hair. Looking at the picture of them I was given of them for my fifth birthday, I would have to say she was right.
Around the frame were words that hadn't appeared until this morning: "In all of creation, all things great and small, you are the one that surpasses them all." Those words made me smile. I know I've heard them before. It was my mother, she was watching over me, her and my father.
"Tessa, are you coming down? The party is about to start." Came the voice of my cousin Candace.
"I'm coming!" I yelled, setting the picture down. I looked for a moment up at the sky to see summer stars shining bright, making me smile.
