"Well, here we are." Jack put the truck in park and sat back against the vinyl seat cover. Daniel sat beside him, gazing at the building in vague disbelief. It looked as if he couldn't believe that the truck had actually brought him here, even though he'd been there for the entire trip.

"Okay, now remember," Daniel turned to Jack, making sure that the other man was looking him in the eyes before he continued. "We talked about this, and all of the books say that it's important that we not overwhelm him right away. After all, the cognitive abili-"

"You would read a book about this." Jack waved a hand dismissively. "I think we can handle this. It's not like I've never done this before."

"Yes, but that was different. This time it's us. So, we have to be sure that we deal with any potential problems as soon as possible."

"You need to calm down." Jack put his right hand on Daniel's shoulder and squeezed reassuringly. "It will be fine. More or less, in the end, it's all about instinct. I just think it's funny that you're so nervous about this. I mean, it's not like the last three visits haven't gone great."

"Yeah I know." Daniel dropped his gaze and studied his fingernails. "I just worry. This is a lot of responsibility, Jack. If anything should happen to us, we have to make sure he's taken care of, and that he has everything that he needs, and his last family environment was a nightmare." He looked back up at Jack, who was listening patiently even though he'd heard this all a million times. "I guess I'm just hoping that we can provide something better."

"Look, Daniel," Jack laid a hand gently over Daniel's on the seat. "Like you just said, it's us this time. Us. We can handle it. We've dealt with worse. We've eaten Carter's cooking for Christ's sake."

"I'm telling her you said that." Daniel snorted.

"Not if you value your life you're not. She'll make us eat that chilli again and then where will you be, smart guy?"

"Okay. I give. I won't tell." Daniel acquiesced, and then the mask of uncertainty returned to his face. Jack noticed it before Daniel had time to speak.

"Don't start again. You've read all the books, we took three classes on addressing potential problems with readjustment, and we've been visiting and acclimating him to us and our personalities. The only thing we can possibly do at this point, is go in there and sign some papers. Besides, you said yourself last week that eventually, despite all of your research, you just have to go into the field to really accomplish anything."

"You were listening?"

"I was watching your mouth move. Somehow the words inadvertently reached my brain." Jack shrugged and Daniel shook his head. Then, the linguist sighed and leaned his head against the back of the truck seat.

"You're right. Let's go." He opened his door and was relieved to see Jack do the same.

And as they turned to enter the large building in front of them, Jack muttered under his breath.

"All this trouble just to get a dog."
