John waited in the crowd of first years, shuffling from foot to foot nervously. A stern looking woman stood at the front of the hall, by a tattered old hat that was on a stool.
"Alderson, Simon." She called out, reading off the long list she had in front of her. A scared looking boy shuffled up to the front, taking a seat on the stool.
"RAVENCLAW!" The hat shouted in a matter of seconds. The house to the left of John started cheering loudly. The pattern continued with John paying little to no attention to who was being sorted where.
"Holmes, Sherlock." John recognised the boy that went up. He had been in the same carriage as John but he had not said a single word to either John or Mary, the other girl who had been sharing with them. The hat didn't hesitate in shouting,
"SLYTHERIN!" As soon as it was put on the boy's head. Mary was sorted into Hufflepuff long before John was called up. He took a deep breath and shakily walked up to the front of the hall.
Hmm, plenty of loyalty here. But we can't ignore the bravery. Hmm, Hufflepuff or Gryffindor?
"GRYFFINDOR!" The Gryffindor table erupted into applause as they had done with every new member of the house. John sat down, grinning and joined in with the general chatter. When the food appeared John was astonished, he was muggle born and still not used to the idea of magic. At the end of the feast the teacher who had called out their names informed them that,
"All lessons begin tomorrow morning so I suggest you all get a good nights' sleep." With that they were dismissed. The first years followed the house prefects like sheep.
"Gryffindors, follow me! Come on, this way!" John scurried after the group.
Meanwhile, Sherlock Holmes wandered after the group of first year Slytherins, dodging out of sight when the Ravenclaws came past.
"Ok, Slytherins, this is your common room. The boys dorms are up those stairs on the right, the girls are on the left. All your luggage will be up there already." Sherlock raced up the stairs, two at a time to avoid any conversation that he might otherwise have to take part in. He sat on his bed, curtains drawn and read for the rest of the evening.
