"According to your mother, this is normal."
River fidgeted nervously. "Since when have you strived for normal? Or believed what my mother said was normal?"
The Doctor pondered this for a moment. "Sussex? 21st century... Ooh! Yes! The King's Arms. Craig's pub league was a man short, Amy told me normal blokes play football. I loved it!"
"Of course you did," she scoffed. "Were you any good?"
Tossing the ball in the air with a smirk on his face, he asked, "Care to find out?"
xXx
"River, are you even trying?"
She threw him a scathing look before she tripped over her own feet again. "Of course I'm trying!" Forcing herself to her feet, she muttered, "I haven't been on the ground this much since..." Her gaze cut to the Doctor's raised eyebrows and she snapped her mouth shut.
"Spoilers?"
"Yes. Well, not so much anymore." Her cheeks slowly turned pink.
He halted the ball with the sole of his foot and marched up to River. "Are you blushing?"
She spun on her heel, away from the Doctor. "No."
"Ooh, you're lying!" He darted around her to face her again, the grin on his face rivalling that of a Smiler. "Doctor Song, what has gotten you all flustered?"
"I can't play football," she hissed through clenched teeth. "And you've always made fun of me for it. I'm guessing this is the time you found out. Usually whenever you forced me to play, you would comment on my lack of ability to handle even one ball."
"So I start making crude sexual innuendos? Hm. Spending too much time with you." He tapped her nose. "But the only reason I'll be making that joke in the future is because you told me it now. Ah! You're blushing even more! I'm finally the one doing the one-upping and it's making you nervous. This is quite the little table-turn, don't you think? For once, I'm not the one who's tripping over nothing and acting like a giraffe, as you seem to love telling me. It strikes me as odd, the graceful River Song can't even beat her gangly husband at football. You're better than me at just about everything else- flying the TARDIS, shooting a gun, dancing (or so you think), even being deviously sexy. But I can play football!"
"You know, I really don't think we should play football anymore."
The Doctor rose an eyebrow again, ever curious. "Oh?"
River nodded and began to smirk. "I've got an idea for a new game." She took off running towards the TARDIS. "It's called 'Catch River!'"
