Don't own any of the characters from Kim Possible. That would be Disney.

Hero

She blinked as the muddy water slid down her eyelashes and obscured her vision.

People call me a hero.

Crimson locks of dirty wet hair haloed her vision as she looked down at the still, small body cradled in her arms.

I don't feel like a hero.

Kneeling in the chaos, she let the cries of suffering beat down on her.

And I certainly don't fit the stereotypical mold of a hero.

The wails of a man drew her attention to the sight of a recently made widower being guided by some National Guard soldiers away from the remains of his destroyed home.

There have been no tragic or untimely deaths in my family.

Much softer than the cacophony surrounding her, the small sniffle cut through the miasma smothering her mind and brought her entire focus on the little girl huddling in the corner of the rescue boat bobbing in the flowing murky water.

I don't have any dark trauma in my past that drives me.

She looked up when the weight in her arms disappeared and saw her flaxen haired boyfriend hand the body off to one of the EMTs.

In fact, my past is filled with happy memories of me and my best friend playing and laughing.

Unburdened of his load he reached down and gently drew the girl from her knees and out of the mud, wrapping her in a warm embrace.

All my life I have known love and support.

She closed her eyes and drew deeper into the safety of his arms.

I only do what I do because I want to help others know this feeling.

Even under the stench of the filth she could smell him and she focused on that familiar smell to block out the pain and suffering that was threatening to consume her.

People call me a hero.

The familiarity and the comfort of the situation she was now in allowed her to breath and focus.

I don't feel like a hero.

She let the stress and depression flow out of her; to reassert her control and drive. She pulled back from her shelter and reentered the disaster around her with a restored confidence and purpose.

But, I will never stop trying to live up to that title.

"Thanks, Ron. I needed that, but we need to get back to the helicopter. There are more people that need to be rescued."

"I've got your back, KP."

Author's Notes: This was a scene from a story that I started a long time ago. I doubt that I will ever finish that story, but I loved this scene too much to let it slip into the forgotten.
