Elena's POV
Elena lifted a box onto from the floor to the bed in her new dorm room. Caroline had beat her there by a few hours and already set up her side of the room and gone out to explore the campus (and find a blood bank nearby). Jeremy rounded a corner and brought another box into the room. "Is that the last one?" she asked. "No. Damon's bringing it up. But I came on up so I could say goodbye. I'm pretty sure I don't want to be here for your goodbye to Damon. Seeing him shove his tongue down your throat at home is enough." He said, sitting down the box. Elena laughed and walked over, hugging her brother.
They talked for a few minutes before Damon entered the room. Jeremy and Elena said goodbye and Jeremy informed Damon he'd be in the car. When he was gone, Damon sat down his box and walked over, grabbing her around the waist. "Sure you don't want help unpacking?" He asked. "If you stay, we aren't going to unpack. And if I'm late for orientation, Caroline is going to kill me." She laughed. Damon nodded. "You sure you're doing okay?" he asked. "Yeah. I mean.. .it's hard, doing this without Bonnie. But it's what she would have wanted." She sighed. Damon nodded and leaned in, kissing her forehead. "Okay. I love you." Damon smiled. Elena snuggled into his chest. "I love you too." She murmured, hugging him tightly. "Two months. "She pouted. "You know…I can drive down before that…if you want." He offered. She shook her head. "No. I have to do this on my own…well, you know. With Caroline." She laughed, rolling her eyes. "But I am going to miss you." She admitted. "I'm going to miss you too." He whispered, kissing the top of her head. "Okay. You have to go. Or I'm going to cry. I already cried on Jeremy." She laughed, sniffling. Damon let go of her slowly and leaned down, giving her a long kiss. "Take care of my brother." She demanded. Damon laughed. "I'll try my best, warrior princess."
Damon's POV
Damon pulled into the driveway of his house and reached over, shaking Jeremy awake. "We're home, kid." He informed him gruffly, before getting out. He quirked an eyebrow when he saw a light on upstairs and peeked around, seeing a car parked out back. Walking inside, he called out and a few seconds later, Katherine appeared at the top of the steps. "What the hell are you doing here?" he asked. "I—Elijah's gone, Stefan split town and no one else likes me but you." She explained. "What makes you think I like you? You tried to kill my girlfriend. You DID kill Jeremy. Get out. " Damon retorted. Jeremy walked in. "What's she doing here?" he asked. "Your guess is as good as mine." Damon said. "Come on, Damon. I'm human now. What harm could I possibly do?" she asked, walking down toward them. "I need a place to stay. I need protection." Damon had to admit, Katherine actually sounded scared. "Let her stay." Jeremy said. They both turned toward him in shock. "Elena and I have…no family left. Katherine's family…even if it's distant. If there's a chance we can help—" "You really had to wake up as Ghandi, didn't you?" Damon asked, rolling is eyes. "Fine, Katherine. You can stay. For a few days…until you figure things out. But you keep to yourself, got it?"
