Kate lay there, waiting for his word of honour, but nothing. All she could hear was the sound of her beating heart and the soft brushes of Merton's breath passing her ear. She longed to hear the words "Millie's memory means nothing to me" but they did not come. Kate began to cry as she felt a warm tear belonging to Merton drop onto her naked back. Her heart was breaking. Slowly but surely her life was falling apart. Months of planning, getting Millie to leave her money to Merton so his wealth would be welcomed into her family with opened arms, all wasted. She and Merton could have been married, if she hadn't let him fall in love with her best friend.

She couldn't do this anymore. Kate got up, wrapped herself in the discarded bed sheets, and left the bedroom. She walked into the living room, confused as to what to do. She held her head in her hands as she walked towards the window. London was busy with people rushing about in the autumn breeze and Kate was jealous of everyone she could see as they were not going through what she was.

She turned around to find Merton standing naked in the door way. "I don't love you any less" he whispered. The crack in Kate's heart deepened. "it doesn't change anything" she replied. She pushed past him and gathered her clothes up off of the bedroom floor. She quickly got dressed and then collapsed in a tearful mess onto the bed. Kate was crying more than she had ever cried in her life. She flinched as she felt Merton's hand on her back. "leave me" she sobbed.
