It was strange that angels should be born from eggs. But they were and they would hatch. There had been seven eggs in the hatchery and only six had hatched and were off getting about with the others. But this last egg was stubborn. The played for it and sang to it but it didn't hatch.
Gabriel the messenger poked at this egg and frowned. Why hadn't it hatched yet? He wanted to meet his new brother or sister.
So it went, Gabriel went back to the hatchery everyday for a full week before Michael appeared before him. "If you're going to keep watching the thing why don't you take care of it until it hatches." Michael told him.
"You know what I will." Gabriel took the egg in hand and flies away.
Day oneTaking care of the egg was not so hard. Until Gabriel got a little careless and tried to impress a few of the ladies not seeing that the egg rolled off the cloud. He caught it just in time.
"You little buddy I go t a feeling me and you are going to be best friends. But for that to happen you have to hatch." He told the egg. The egg sat there and didn't move. Didn't even twitch.
"I wonder if you'll be a boy or a girl. It wouldn't matter to me if you were either I'd love you anyway." Gabe told the egg.
Day twoThe next day Gabriel read to the egg for hours. When he finally thought of something.
"All the other angels have been given names but what about you? What will you be called? How about I name you? You can't have the same name as someone else that won't be fun because you'll always be the second." Gabriel told the egg.
"How about Harold?" Gabriel looked at the egg.
"You're right that's a terrible name. It would be nice to know what you are before naming you. You don't wan to be a girl named Daniel or a boy named Sasha. That's just not fair or right. I mean look at Lucifer. I call him Luci." Gabriel laughed.
Days more would go by before Gabe felt something in his sleep. It was bumping into his arm. Gabe looked eyes still heavy with sleep at the egg waddling away from him.
"Hey wait a second little buddy." Gabe said scooping the egg into his hands. Only got your feet huh? Come one you can do it. Break free so I can meet you." He told the angel. An arm broke through and then the other.
"You're not having and easy time of this are you?" Gabe asked.
All the limbs disappeared into the egg as it wriggled around in his hand and suddenly broke into pieces. The little angel in his hands stared back at him upside down with the largest pair of blue eyes Gabriel had ever seen.
"Hello little one. Now that you've hatched lets get you a name shall we. You look like a little boy and you don't look like a Harold or a Daniel." Gabe babbled on.
The hatchling tried to stand and only managed to fall out of Gabe's hands this time. But he was caught very quickly. "You have to be careful baby brother." Gabe told him.
The little angel kissed the tip of Gabe's nose with a smile. "Hug?"
Gabriel couldn't resist that little voice or his big blue eyes and hugged him.
"Can you say Gabriel?"
"Gab!" the hatchling said clapping his hands together.
"Close enough." Gabe smiled. "I know what we'll call you, Castiel." The blue-eyed angel looked at him.
"Do you like that name?" Gabe asked.
Castiel nodded as he snuggled into Gabe. "I love you too baby brother."
