Protecting Him
When Chin Ho Kelly decided to play the role of the culprit behind his uncle's theft, he knew what he was doing. He was deaf to the cries of Uncle Keako and Aunt Mele. The truth was, he owed them. This was his way of paying back.
If Kono had found out about his plan back then, she could have demanded to him and Uncle Keako to tell the truth. So would John McGarrett. Although Chin loved and respected both his cousin and his partner, he knew they wouldn't understand. They would never understand why Chin had done what he did because they were not him.
Uncle Keako was like the father Chin never had. He was his hero, his idol. Uncle Keako was the reason Chin became a cop.
When Uncle Keako had told him, "I'm not going to lie anymore," Chin felt as if his heart was being ripped out. His uncle had made mistakes, but he kept people safe. If his badge was taken away from him, and if he was locked up, there would be no one to protect.
Uncle Keako had stolen the money to save his wife. That was enough, wasn't it?
Chin had taken the blame gracefully and accepted his fate. Then he was recruited into Five-0.
Chin had forgotten how much he had loved his job back in HPD.
It wasn't enough for IA apparently. When Chin had protected his uncle, they hadn't believed him at first. Then they wanted the twenty thousand dollars by the end of the day.
Chin sighed and closed his eyes to think. He had no regrets doing what had done. Well...a few. He would miss Steve McGarrett and Danny Williams. Kono, his cousin. Five-0.
Home.
"Cuz, you've been carrying this for a long time. You took blame for a crime you didn't commit, and lost your job, your friends, your family. And now you have a chance to get out from under it. And what? You're gonna throw it all way? You're going to put yourself into debt and go to prison."
Kono's words rang in Chin's ears. Yes, why would he be so willing to throw it all away? Why had Chin truly done this?
Why had he done what he had done?
As Chin Ho Kelly sat before the waves, the answer came to him.
To protect him.
To protect his uncle.
