Home But Newly
By Aislin Oriel
In his wanderings, Duo found himself standing outside Heero's apartment. He wasn't quite sure as to why he was there - but he wasn't very sure about anything much anymore. Besides, this seemed like the only place to go. Though he co-owned the house that he and Hilde lived in, he couldn't consider that his home anylonger. He didn't have a home in any sense of the word.
Fruitlessly, Duo pressed the doorbell and awaited the verdict. Then, the door opened and Heero stood there as if to study him. After looking him over he appeared to understand. He motioned for his soaked friend to come in.
As the door closed behind them, in a moment of released defenses, Heero took Duo in a great embrace. He was trying to invoke some form of message into him. Duo just stood stunned, not sure what to do about the kind gesture.
"I'm sorry Duo. It hurts like hell, I know." his normally stoic voice travelled into Duo's ears, destroying any past thoughts.
Then, Duo knew what he meant. So he accepted his friend's comforting hug and told him everything that happened. For once Duo appretiated Heero's silence, realizing that he was a listening presence that couldn't be equaled. Usually Duo's voice fell upon deaf ears.
To top that amazing revelation off, Heero continued, confiding in him something that Relena hadn't even told Hilde. Two weeks ago.
The agonizing anniversary of the day his mother had died. No, it was always a lie when Heero said he didn't know anything of his past before Odin Lowe. He remembered far more than he wished to. That day had brought back so many painful memories.
The day he'd been taken away for harsh, desensitizing training. With his newer understanding of what it meant to be human, and his denial of emotion stripped away from him, it had been too much for him to handle.
So, with Relena away at work, he was left in a flooding, depressing mood. Rehashing his earlier tendancies, he'd gone to the pain medication.
When he'd over-dosed, grief and self-worthlessness had blinded him. Because with the war over, what the hell was he supposed to do with all the shit that washed back to him?
Missions had been his driving force, and Relena was a current distraction from dark thoughts. But even her brilliant presence in his life couldn't save him from himself,
- Or so he'd thought. -
It was hard to explain to her and even harder to look into her eyes and see the disappointment and pity they held. But even though it was difficult, she had helped - in her own way.
That had earned a smile from Duo, and Heero raised an eyebrow at his sudden shift in mood.
"Thanks buddy. Normally I'd be joking when I said that your crappy life made me feel better, but right now I mean it. Thanks a lot." he said and patted his annoyed-but-still-compassionate friend on the back.
Then, with that all said, he proceeded in walking past him and into Heero's sparce apartment. He stopped and slowly turned around, lifting his head and looking serious again.
"Uh, do you think I could stay here for a while?"
"Sure." Heero said quietly.
END
AN: 'Kay, so that's that. I'm touched... *turns around and wipes eyes on sleeve* That concludes this portion of my The Fling spin-offs. You can be assured that there'll be more. I'm going to do one where it's Hilde's reaction after Duo finds out next. Look out for it. But for now, I'm gonna continue The Fling so I can end it where it leads to this. (If that made any sense whatsoever.) As always, please review so this nutcase of an author can feel special. Thanx. Luv Aislin Oriel.
