i.

It was dawn.

A little pink haired girl knelt before a mewling kitten, her blue eyes studying the feline's form fondly and longingly.

Hesitantly – almost afraid, she stretches her hand and nearly retrieves it when the kitten rubs itself against the pale, tiny hand.

The little girl smiles so hard that her lips start to hurt, and trusts herself to stroke the kitten's soft gray fur.

It purrs contently.

The sky has already turned dark when she lets the kitten follow her home.

It was the next dawn when the girl wakes up to find the kitten dead and broken in many angles.

She starts screaming when the tears fall.

-

When Kagura was five, she wanted her strength to go away.

ii.

The little girl stares dully at the bump in the newly dug ground, and places stones around the burial site.

Her eyes are red-rimmed.

Beside her, an older boy wipes her dirt-stained face and holds her hand.

As they sat side by side, silently, the boy fishes his other hand in his pocket and stretches it open to reveal two red hair ties, smiling down at the little girl.

They looked alike – the same shade of pink hair and the same pair of startling, clear blue eyes.

-

Years later, she finds her family torn up and the boy is bleedingbleedingbleeding, he doesn't stop bleeding.

He walks away from the little girl, bleeding.

-

When Kagura turned ten, all she wanted was to have her brother back.

iii.

She has met new people.

There is a curly haired samurai and he picks his nose, a shrimpy boy who wears dorky glasses and talks a lot, and she now sleeps in a closet, eats cheap snacks and meets sadistic rivals but it feels more like home than anywhere else.

She will go to the ends of the world for them.

-

When Kagura was fifteen, she wanted to protect.
