I walked into the school. I thought to myself, I can't wait! It'll be great here.

The door made a soft click as I entered my new classroom. I gave a soft sigh of relief, finally, I thought we'd never get here.

Looking around, I noticed a woman wearing high-heeled pumps, a red and white striped dress, and her nails crimson with fresh polish. She had auburn hair and pink cheeks. Hah, she looks like a peppermint drop. My nose wrinkled as I got a bit closer, smells like it too!

I giggled a little to myself as I took a seat.

I soon found out her name was Caroline Fisher and my new teacher. So far everything was fine and school wasn't as fun as I thought it would be. I sat there as we began to learn our ABC's. When called on, I read them aloud like I was supposed to. Apparently this wasn't what she wanted because Miss Caroline scolded me and told me to tell my father to stop teaching me. I tried to tell her that he didn't teach me anything, but she didn't believe me. When she found out I could write as well, she scolded me again. She told me the same thing as before, to tell my father to stop teaching me. When I tried to rebuke, she merely waved it off.

When I told her about Walter, she got mad. She took me to the front of the class and punished me. I thought she might strike a deal with me when she told me to hold out my hand, but I couldn't remember saying anything to make a deal out of.

I looked to the rest of my class for any sort of answer, they were just as lost as I was about now. They looked as confused and helpless as a fish on dry land.

It turns out that a deal wasn't exactly what she had in mind for me. I learned that soon enough when she pulled out a ruler and began to pat my hand repeatedly with it. How embarrassing... I began to turn a light shade of rose as I returned to my seat.

As the morning ensued I was annoyed, but no longer humiliated. Maybe school ain't so great after all. Why didn't Jem tell me about this?

I was scolded again for being literate. Hey! My dad didn't teach me anything! I just know how to read and it's Cal's fault I know how to write! I wanted to scream. My head felt ready to explode like a balloon blown up too much.

I was right and I know I was. My dad didn't teach me how to read and it's Calpurnia's fault I know how to write. Miss Caroline should know this.

So naturally I did what anyone should do in this type of situation, I decided to tell her and that's exactly what I did. I told her they hadn't taught me anything and she punished me again.

This corner is so boring. Yeah, you guessed it. I told Caroline Fisher, my new teacher, the truth and got sent to the corner... Again.

This year is not going to be fun. Why wouldn't Jem tell me about stuff like this? I don't want to come here anymore! I thought as I pouted in my new spot to wait for my teacher to say I can go back to my seat or for the bell to signal the end of the school day.
