-Ascendence-

The minister spoke his final words and whispered a haunting amen to the small gathering. He excused himself and took a few steps back, allowing the mourners to approach the grave. The services had been performed many months ago, but the wounds were still fresh and painful.

The solid icy layer, hiding the ground until the spring had delayed the burial, until this day, when the survivors gathered once more and shed their tears of sorrow. Their grieving faces remembered the good times, over the bad and were finally ready to say their final goodbyes.

The snow had melted and the cold, which still clung to their hearts, on the outside, had departed. But inside, they still felt cold. The warmth of spring brought them no joy and could not warm and sooth their anguish. There was no rebirth, but only the delayed deaths of their friends.

Only a few people attended the final resting service. They stood between the coffins and amongst themselves, even the strongest of them cried. The graveyard was somber; they were the only ones still living, a very painful existence. After a hard moment of silence had lingered poignantly, the first mourner dared move.

Ivan dropped flowers, respectively, into each grave, as they were slowly being lowered, deep within the earth. He needed help to stand again, as saying goodbye, was the hardest thing he had ever done. Even his tears, denial, and anguish could not bring them back.

Sergei spoke to the spirits and watched the slow descent, through tangled lashes, until the coffins touched the ground. He cried for his friends, wished them the best, and dragged his feet through the mud, as he walked away from the saddest moment of his life.

Kai too was crying. His tears were not profuse and uncontrollable but their presence was visible as they streaked down along his cheeks. He crouched down amid both graves and confessed how their friendship had meant so much too him. But now…they were gone.

Yuriy could not even look down at the graves. It still hurt far too much to acknowledge that they were truly gone. He buried his face into Boris' coat, as everyone began to walk away. The service ended but they remained. He stayed to watch it through until the end, when the dirt would bury his pain.

Boris tried his best to comfort Yuriy, but he could not keep a straight face for both of them. He too grieved, unashamed of his tears of sadness. It was such a hard loss to bear. The attendants began to throw dirt onto the ivory coffins and each thud reminded him of how brutal reality truly was.

''We should go…'' Yuriy said, as the gravediggers began to pat and smooth over the soil of their graves.

''Da…'' Boris agreed, as they each took one final look at their resting places and walked off together, hand in hand.

Love transcends all elements in its opposition…

And together, their love could even overcome death.
