Ok this is my second fanfic, and not particularly the best, but I still like it, and I hope you do too! It's a Zutara and the basic gist of it all was kind of like a conversation my best friend and I had a long time about the elements. R&R!!

Ying-Yang Love

Katara looked over at Zuko, who was sitting on the rock that hung out over the river. He just stared into the water, his expression unreadable.

"Why is fire bad?" Zuko asked randomly. Katara walked over to him and sat down. "I mean, the Fire Nation hasn't exactly made the best name for themselves, but just because some are bad, why does everyone have to be?"

Katara sighed and lightly touched his arm. "Zuko, the mistakes of others should not write your reputation. You choose to be who you want to be." Her words answered that question, but Zuko wasn't done.

"It's not just that," Zuko said, looking at Katara. "The element of fire does nothing but destroy." Katara took his hand and looked at him with affection.

"Every element has its good side and bad side. Fire may burn, causing pain and destruction, but it also creates warmth and comfort. You can clean water by putting it over fire, right? The way you choose to use your power is up to you."

Zuko scooped up some water then let it fall back into the river. "What about water? And earth and air? They are all good elements, good nations." Katara laughed softly and watched the ripples in the water.

"Water quenches thirst and cleanses, but it can also destroy. Floods, heavy rains, hurricanes, they all cause turmoil and pain." She dipped her feet into the river, shivering at the sudden cold.

"Earth holds the plants that feed us, and gives us shelter, but it also hurts us with earthquakes and land slides, disrupting people's homes." She picked up a piece of grass and twisted it between her fingers.

"And air…we breathe in air all the time; we can't live without it. But tornadoes can kill, and winds that are too strong damage villages and crops." She smiled as a gentle breeze danced around them. Katara looked back a Zuko, and her smile widened.

"There's a yang to every ying, Zuko. That's part of life, and we manage it everyday." Zuko nodded and took a big breath.

"You know something, Katara? You're amazing." Katara laughed, which made Zuko laugh. "Really, you are. And you're right. Just because fire seems to do more damage than other elements, we choose who we are and what we do."

Katara smiled and said, "Yes, we do. And…everyone makes bad choices; it's our nature to. We'll do or say things that we regret later on, but we find a way to fix it. Or we live with it. Either way, we can't change the past or what other people do."

Zuko shook his head and said roughly, "See that's what makes me feel so helpless. Knowing that something or someone is doing something wrong and not being able to do anything about it…I just hate it." He rubbed his eyes and sighed sadly.

"If that's how you feel, then join the club." Katara shook her head at him. "Zuko, we all feel like that, but we have to face the fact that we can't do anything about it. We can try to clean everything up a bit, but we can't change that it actually happened. We can't erase the past." She stood up, lifting him up with her. "Okay?"

Zuko smiled down at her and said, "Okay, Katara." Then he swept her in a hug that lead to a kiss; a kiss that defied the laws of reason; a kiss that joined two opposites, creating a whole; a kiss that defined a ying-yang love.
