A/N: Welcome! Thanks for clicking on this fic to read when you have so many to choose from. I don't really have much else to say… hope you enjoy it :).

Kurt stared steadily at his reflection, analysing every detail he could. The pale skin, the round nose, pink lips, blue eyes… he'd never given much thought to what he looked like before. But apparently here… here it was important. More than important. It was crucial; it defined you.

He struggled to grasp that. That right now, what he was looking back at defined him, because, surely he was more. No, he knew he was more. He wondered how he would be perceived… was he good looking? Ugly? Masculine? Feminine? He really didn't have much to go by. It seemed to change so frequently, and opinions were so varied he just didn't know.

Humans were weird to confine themselves to so little.

His eyes travelled down. He was wearing a dark blue jacket, with the sleeves rolled up to his elbow. It hung open on his torso to reveal the black and white striped shirt beneath. For pants he wore tight red jeans. They were uncomfortable and constricting… but he was supposed to put value in his appearance and he'd seen this look in a popular magazine. He couldn't afford to stand out now.

And he was pretty sure he'd nailed the fashion side of things. More so than Burt anyway, who had opted for lose, faded old jeans, a flannel shirt and a cap. But then, Burt wasn't the one entering the war zone, he'd be staying on the outskirts of it all.

"Hurry up, you're going to be late." Burt called.

Kurt glanced at the time and realised that, yeah, he would be, and grabbed the bag he'd packed earlier with everything he needed. Books, notepads and pens, as well as a small amount of money so he remembered to eat. He walked down the hall and out to the living room where Burt stood looking serious.

"Are you ready?"

"As I'll ever be." Kurt said, trying to sound confident in front of his mentor. Father now. Burt was his father here.

"Do you remember what to do?"

"No. I've forgotten even though you told me about five hundred times."

"That snark will get you in trouble one day."

He shrugged. "I'll deal if it ever comes to that."

"Yeah, well, don't expect me to bail you out."

"I'm running late." He said.

"Then go."

"I'm going."

"Say hi to Blaine for me." Burt called out after him.

"Bye Dad."

A/N: It's only short because it's a prologue. The next chapter will be up in just a few days and will be a lot longer. If you like it, let me know :).
