"Zuko, when are we going to stop? " asked the girl politely. She knew that Zuko was irritated, so it was best for her to be as meek as possible. The two hooded figures were sitting on a ostrich horse. One was small, wearing a soiled, ripped dress that had once been very fine. The other was very tall and strong, with a red scar on the side of his face.
"Don't call me Zuko any longer, Kaya. It's too dangerous." Zuko said hoarsely.
Worry dragged him down. He couldn't believe that things had gotten so dangerous. Everything had been so peaceful before, but suddenly Aang and Katara's family were forced to separate. The trusted each one of their children to a friend; Taro to Toph; Meiko to Sokka; Kaya to Zuko; and Reina to Haru. Katara went into hiding with her four year old son, while Aang went away to his Avatar duties.
Kaya bit her lip. "What should I call you then? And what about me? I should have a new name too."
Zuko sighed and looked away. He couldn't believe this girl. Just a couple of hours ago she was screaming for her parents and throwing the loudest, messiest tantrum he had ever seen! He had to tear her away from her twin sister, Reina. Now Kaya was acting as if nothing traumatic or life changing had happened. She was acting.. normal.
He turned his head and looked at Kaya, who stared blankly back.
"I will be your Uncle Lee. You will be my neice, Sakura. There is a town coming up in a few minutes. We can get something to eat there."
"What if I don't want to be Sakura? I want my name to be noodles. You can say that I am one of those traveling hippie nomads, and my mom named her children after food and-"
"Kaya, now is not the time to be fooling around." Zuko interrupted. Kaya pursed her lips angrily and looked away.
"Aren't you supposed to call me Sakura now, huh, Uncle Lee?" said the girl. She studied his scarred face.
She started again; "You know, Uncle Lee sounds stupid. It makes you seem old. You're not old at all! And how do you think that people aren't going to recognize you with that scar?"
Zuko's face heated up with anger. He turned away from the twelve year old girl. After a moment, Zuko broke the silence.
"Why didn't they give me the nice twin that didn't make up stories and pester people all day? Why, why, why? I don't deserve this." Zuko spat quietly.
Kaya ignored him, her grey eyes sparkling with excitement as she spotted the village. "Oh, there it is, Zuko! Now we can eat! I am so hungry." She said, and leapt off the ostrich horse, creating a gust of air that blew off her hood, thick hair blowing in her face.
Zuko jumped off and grabbed her wrist. "K- I mean, Sakura! What did I tell you about airbending?" he said in a shouted whisper.
"I forgot." said Kaya, and with a mocking tone she added, "Uncle."
Zuko pulled her closer. "Listen to me. If anyone asks, your name is Sakura and mine is Lee. We are travelers. And most of all, do not, DO NOT, airbend."
Kaya tried to break her wrists free, but he was too strong. "Yeah, yeah, whatever."
Zuko held tight. "No, you don't understand. Do you know what will happen if you are caught airbending? They will know you are the avatar's daughter, and people will come looking for you. They will hold us hostage and torture us."
The girl's eyes changed, and she looked up at Zuko fearfully. "Torture?" she squeaked.
Zuko nodded and released her. Kaya was abnormally quiet for the rest of the walk.
(Me: Kaya is nice, but she is moody and random. I will only continue this if people are interested in reading more. Otherwise, this is just a oneshot.)
