Airports
Just a little something I thought of while I was waiting to fly out for vacation a few weeks back. Still fighting my writer's block! As always, I do this for fun. I own NO part of STFBE.
The skies outside were gloomy, grey… no, they were black. There was no sun to be seen for miles. A breeze caused everyone to draw their overcoats tighter and their umbrellas closer. The rain had started in the wee hours of the morning, and had steadily gotten worse. The weather was beginning to show its wear on the people.
Five hours earlier, Levi paced from Sue's window to her door to her bedside, and back again. He walked the same route over and over until he managed to wake his mistress.
"Levi, what is it boy?" Sue asked as she reached for her bedside lamp. Levi finally sat and put his head on her bed cover letting out a soft whimper. Sue noticed the curtain in her bedroom blowing and felt droplets of rain hitting her hand as she reached to shut it. "Where did this storm come from?" She asked out loud. "I guess if I managed to catch the news at least once this week, it would have helped." She looked down at her constant companion.
She shuffled back to the edge of her bed, picking up her Blackberry. There was a missed message. It was from Jack.
"Hi Sue. How's things in your part of the world? It looks like I'll be home tomorrow, but I don't want to get my hopes up. You know how things go. How's Levi? Give him a scratch behind the ears for me. I miss you guys."
Sue smiled. She reached to Levi's ears, scratching them as her smiled widened. It had been two weeks since Jack had gone on assignment in the Middle East. She missed him. She tried not to think of how much, it just made the pang in her heart grow. It made it harder to hide her feelings for him. Sue lay her head back on her pillow, smiling as she drifted back off to sleep.
Sue watched the long corridor of people deplaning. She wondered where people were going to or coming from. Little children giggled with pure joy as they jumped into their grandparent's arms. Tears flowed down the cheeks of wives seeing their husbands for the first time in months as they returned home from overseas duty.
She sighed softly, wondering if she would ever have that. The bond. The love. Jack. Her eyes clouded with tears, and she fought to stifle a whimper. Levi nudged his snout against Sue's knee. She looked up to see Jack walking toward her. She quickly wiped at her eyes, making sure her cheeks were dry, and took a deep breath, recomposing herself. Sue watched as he took slow, weighted steps in her direction. He hadn't seen her.
"Stay." Sue commanded Levi as his back side began to wiggle the closer Jack got to them. She straightened her back, took another deep breath, and slowly stood. Almost as if her soul called out to his, he looked up. A smile graced his lips. Sue slightly blushed. Their eyes locked as he walked closer to her. Jack's steps seemed lighter, almost as if someone had filled them with purpose.
"Hi." Jack said with a wider smile than he'd meant to display.
"Welcome home." Sue said.
"I wasn't expecting anyone." Jack said, hinting with a question.
"We missed you too." Sue said. With that, Jack pulled her into his arms for a gentle hug. Sue let her arms tighten around his waist, and pulled him closer. He began to back away when he felt, for a millisecond, Sue's grip tighten.
Jack dropped his bag on the seat Sue had just been sitting in, and wrapped both arms tightly around her. Sue took a deep breath, and smiled into his neck. Maybe. Just maybe one day, she would have the bond, the love, and Jack.
