Disclaimer: Characters are JK Rowling, the song is Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz
"Boy! Do your chores! NOW! If you want dinner, then they'll all be done by the time I'm home!" Uncle Vernon yelled at an eight year old Harry. Although it was a Wednesday morning, Harry wasn't at school because he was 'sick'. In truth, his face was too bruised to be seen in public. Vernon left to go to work, leaving Harry home alone with a list of chores that nobody could do in the eight hours he had, much less a small, eight year old boy. He still hoped that maybe, someday, someone would come and save him from this life.
Somewhere, over the rainbow,
Way up high,
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby.
He vacuumed the house, weeded the back garden, washed the windows, and was starting to cook dinner when Uncle Vernon arrived home.
"BOY!" Uncle Vernon screamed, his face turning an ugly shade of red, "Why, WHY have you not FINISHED YOUR CHORES!" he bellowed.
"I-I'm sorry uncle." Harry started, "I tri-" he was broken off by his 'uncle' dragging him by the hair to his cupboard where the door was slammed shut and locked. Vernon walked away muttering about, "insolent little boys who don't do as they're told."
Somewhere, over the rainbow,
Bluebirds fly.
Birds fly over the rainbow,
Why, oh why, can't I?
The next day he had to stay home again. Luckily, after letting the boy out to use the bathroom, Vernon forgot about his nephew completely. So, after Vernon left for work, Harry finished yesterdays chores and set off to the park where he sat, until school was let out, on the swings. As soon as he saw kids walking down the street towards home, he raced back to number four as fast as he could. He couldn't believe how badly he'd lost track of time! Aunt Petunia always got home just before Dudley. He had to beat both of them home and get into the cupboard, or face his punishment. He didn't make it in time.
"You!" Aunt Petunia hissed, "Where have you been!"
"I-I finished my chores, so I went to the park Aunt Petunia." Harry said, eyes downcast. "You went out! Where anybody could see you! Why, pray tell, do you think you were left at home today, instead of going to school!" She demanded.
"So nobody would see me." Harry said in monotone, as though he had said this many times before.
"Just wait until your uncle gets home." Hours later Harry faced his punishment. Two days in the cupboard, leaving only for the bathroom and his light bulb was taken out. He would be in the pitch black for two whole days.
Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds
Are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me.
He wished he could run away and never return. Run away up, above the sky, into the heavens where he knew his parents were waiting for him. But, he couldn't. Even if he had somewhere to run, the Durlsey's would find him and drag him home. He'd be in more trouble then he could even imagine.
Somewhere, over the rainbow,
Bluebirds fly.
Birds fly over the rainbow.
Why then, oh why, can't I?
He loved watching the sky. He loved watching the clouds drift lazily across an ocean of blue, with birds happily twittering away, not a worry in the world. He wished he could fly with the birds. He wished more than anything in the world that he could fly up and into the sky where nobody could catch him, where nobody could yell at him, where nobody could lock him away like an unwanted doll.
If happy little bluebirds fly
Above the rainbow
Why, oh why, can't I?
